WATERLOO, Ont. -- Chris Chappell tallied his ninth goal of the season as the Waterloo Warriors rallied with two goals in the final 12 minutes to edge visiting McGill 2-1 in OUA men's hockey at the Columbia Ice Field arena, Saturday.

It was the eighth consecutive victory for Waterloo, who have posted impressive wins over UQTR (3-2 in OT), Carleton (4-2) and Windsor (5-2 in 2OT) over that stretch. However, the victory was only Waterloo's third in their last nine meetings with McGill, improving their all-time record against the Redmen to 18-12-3 dating back to their first rendezvous in 1964.

Cedric McNicoll opened the scoring for McGill, notching his seventh of the season on a power-play rebound from the high slot at 19:46 of the opening period. The junior centre from Boucherville, Que., is tied for sixth in the OUA scoring race with 26 points in 17 games.

After a scoreless middle frame, Waterloo tied the game at 1-1 in the final stanza when Mike Moffat struck at 8:39.

McGill had the territorial edge over the first two periods with a 23-15 edge in shots on net but Waterloo came on strong in the final period and came away with an 18-9 advantage in shots to finish with a 33-32 margin.The Redmen were 1-for-4 on the power-play, while snuffing out all three shorthanded situations.

Both goaltenders registered 31 saves. Waterloo's Mike Morrison improved his record to 11-5 and is tied for the league lead in victories. McGill sophomore Karel St-Laurent dropped to 6-2. St-Laurent continues to lead all OUA netminders with a stingy 1.88 goals-against and is ranked second in save percentage (.932).

The Redmen dropped to third in the OUA East with a 13-5-0 record, four points in arrears of UQTR (14-2-2) and Carleton (15-4-0). McGill will remain in Waterloo overnight, where they will confront Laurier (5-12-1) on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. in a bid to snap a rare two-game losing skid. There is no webcast or broadcast scheduled. Last season, the Golden Hawks upset No. 5 McGill 4-3 at McConnell Arena on Nov. 22, 2013. It was WLU's third consecutive conquest over McGill dating back to the 2006 season. The teams are now knotted at 11-11-1 lifetime against each other since they first met in the 1960s.
