MONTREAL -- Claudia Agozzino, a rookie midfielder from St. Leonard, Que., tallied the winning marker and goalkeeper Cassandra Fafalios of Richmond Hill, Ont., posted a two-save shutout as McGill blanked the Concordia Stingers 2-0 in Quebec university soccer action, Sunday, at Concordia Stadium.

The victory evened both team's record at 1-1 in the RSEQ conference. McGill dominated play with a 16-5 advantage in shots attempted, including a 10-2 edge on net. The Martlets also held an 8-4 margin in corner kicks.

"We played a good game against an intense opponent," said Jose-Luis Valdes, in his second year as bench boss of the Martlets.  "We capitalized on a free kick early on and that allowed us to calm our nerves to better circulate the ball. In the second half, we made a few subs to maintain the high energy on the field, had a few scoring chances and did not give up too many chances (in our end)."

Agozzino, a 19-year-old civil engineering freshman, put her mates on the scoreboard in the 16th minute of play, driving a free-kick through the outstretched arms of diving Concordia 'keeper Maria Kaperonis.

Sophomore Elisabeth Perrett of Vancouver, B.C., added an insurance marker a dozen minutes into the second half, converting a pass from Anais Robert, a second-year defender from Ottawa.

"I was also pleased with how clean our centre-backs were defensively. We have also seen very good contributions from our first year in these two first games which is very promising for the season," added Valdes.

Agozzino merited player-of-the-game honours for the Martlets, while Laurence Thivierge received similiar honours for the Stingers.

McGill will host UQAM (0-0-2) on Thursday, Sept. 11 at 6 p.m., while Concordia will host Laval (1-1) on Sept. 12.
