MONTREAL -- Alexander King scored the game-winning tally as the McGill university men's soccer team edged Concordia 2-1 at Concordia Stadium, Sunday.

"It was a difficult game but it was ours to win," said Redmen head coach Marc Mounicot of the physical cross-town affair that featured a combined 30 fouls and six yellow cards, split evenly between the bitter rivals."We were coming off a tough game in difficult weather conditions against Sherbrooke on Friday and it was difficult to bounce back strong as the Stingers were well-rested but we accomplished our goal of winning both games to open the season and I'm very pleased."

King converted a pass from freshman Antoine Chauvel in the 66th minute of play to snap a 1-1 tie. Valentin Radevich had given McGill a 1-0 lead, assisted by Patrick Fusarini, in the 23rd minute but Concordia's Karim Haroun evened the count at 1-1 less than four minutes before the intermission.

The Redmen had a 7-4 edge in shots on goal as goalkeeper Max Leblond made three saves for the victory. McGill, which improved to 2-0, will host UQAM on Friday, Sept. 11 at 8 p.m.

Concordia 'keeper Wes Aucoin made five saves and earned player-of-the-game honours for Concordia, while  McGill freshman Davide Salvoni earned the honours for his side.
