MONTREAL --
Amelie Tremblay, a senior defender from Montreal snapped a 3-3 draw in the 73rd minute to give visiting Sherbrooke a 4-3 victory over the McGill University women's soccer team in wet, humid conditions at Molson Stadium, Friday.
The lead changed hands four times in the regular season-opener, which started 20 minutes late due to an early evening thunderstorm in the Montreal area. Sherbrooke finished second in the eight-team RSEQ conference with a 10-3-1 record, four points ahead of the fourth-place Martlets (8-3-3).
A wild first half featured five goals, with the Vert & Or taking a 3-2 lead into halftime. McGill tied it up at 3-3 in the 60th minute when junior
Daphnee Morency-Roussin of Boulder, Co., converted a nice crossing pass from
Rebecca Green, a senior from Green's harbour, Nfld.
Less than 10 minutes later, Sherbrooke's
Audrey Lagarde was awarded a penalty-kick after a McGill defender was called for a hand-ball. But Martlets goalkeeper
Cassandra Fafalios, a sophomore from Richmond Hill, Ont., made a spectacular diving save to her right.
A few minutes later,
Marie-Eve Jacques deposited a nice pass which split two McGill defenders, setting up the game-winning tally by Tremblay.
McGill had a 9-8 edge in shots on goal and a 15-14 advanbtage in attemped shots.
"It was not the typical soccer game and was packed with a lot of scoring chances," said
Jose-Luis Valdes, in his second season as McGill head coach. "Sherbrooke has a very strong lineup, packed with imposing players up front. But we are also strong offensively and every time they scored to take the lead, there was no let down on our side and we battled back. So I have to be happy with that aspect of our game... We appeared very nervous in the first half but we settled down at halftime, made a few adjustments and regained possession of the game. The chances were there but we just didn't put them away, unfortunately."
In the first half,
Laura Veilleux gave the Vert & Or a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute of play but three minutes later,
Rebecca Green evened the count at 1-1. Sherbrooke regained the upper-hand when
Audrey Lagarde tallied in the 29th minute but McGill rallied again when
Audrey-Ann Coughlan struck paydirt in the 40th minute. Jacques replied two minutes later to give Sherbrooke the lead heading into intermission.
Coughlan left the contest in the 57th minute with what appeared to be an ankle injury. She will be re-evaluated on Saturday and her status for McGill's road game at Concordia on Sunday (1 pm) is not yet known.
