MONTREAL -- Alexander King, a fifth-year striker from Cambridge, England, scored the game-winner as the McGill University men's soccer team opened the RSEQ regular season with a 1-0 shutout over visiting Sherbrooke in steamy, stormy, weather conditions at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium, Friday.

King, who majors in international development studies, converted a pass from midfielder Alexandre De Santis in the 42nd minute for the game's lone goal.

The game, which began 30 minutes after the scheduled kickoff because the women's game had been delayed by weather, was halted twice for 28 additional minutes by a flashy, thunder-and-lightning show across the Montreal skies. When the mist cleared, two hours and 20 minutes had ticked off the clock after the opening kickoff and McGill co-captain Max Leblond, a junior goalkeeper from France, turned aside five shots for the whitewash.

His counterpart at the other end of the pitch, Guillaume Proulx, was credited with seven saves in a losing effort.

Both teams racked up attempted shots but McGill held an 8-5 margin in shots on net against the Vert & Or.

Sherbrooke (0-1) is off until Sept. 12 when they travel to Trois-Rivieres. McGill (1-0), will make the short jaunt across town on Sunday (Sept. 7) to play Concordia (0-0) in a 3 p.m. start. Last year, the Stingers posted a 5-7-0 record and  finished tied with fourth-place McGill (4-5-3) but the Redmen claimed the final playoff berth in a tie-breaker.
