MONTREAL -- Rookie striker Audrey-Ann Coughlan of Longueuil, Que., came off the bench to score the game-winner in the 76th minute and sophomore 'keeper Cassandra Fafalios of Richmond Hill, Ont., merited a one-save shutout as McGill blanked UQTR 2-0 in women's soccer at Molson Stadium, Friday.

Coughlan, a science freshman majoring in kinesiology, was selected by the UQTR coaches as McGill's player of the game. With 14 minutes remaining in a scoreless draw, she converted a nifty pass from veteran Meghan Bourque on a fast 2-on-1 break after a Patriotes turnover at midfield. Hannah Kirby, a fifth-year mathematics senior from Kanata, Ont., added an insurance marker seven minutes later to put the match on ice.

McGill had a lopsided 20-2 advantage in attempted shots but goalkeeper Gabrielle Lambert posted a stellar performance. She was credited with six saves in a losing cause and was selected as player of the game for UQTR.

"It took us about 10 minutes into the first half before we kind of took control," said McGill head coach Jose-Luis Valdes. "We had a lot of chances but the 'keeper on the other side of the field made some very, very good saves to keep it scoreless. Then we kind of hesitated and looked for a perfect shot, which slowed down our rhythm. But in the second half, we made some subs for fresh legs and we finally broke the ice. The first goal took the pressure off and we played a more relaxed the rest of the way."

"Meghan Bourque was unstoppable out there. She kept pressing and created a number of chances, including a nice play on the winning goal."

The victory helped solidify McGill's grasp on the fourth and final playoff berth in the RSEQ conference standings. With seven games remaining in their regular season schedule, the Martlets are 3-3-1, just two points in arrears of third-place Sherbrooke (4-2-0) and three ahead of fifth-place Concordia (2-3-1) in the eight-team league.

McGill will host the Stingers in a crucial matchup at Molson Stadium on Sunday (Sept. 28) at 6 p.m. A win would add some clarity regarding a playoff berth for the Martlets but a loss would muddy up the post-season scenario.
