Secret weapon Fowo unveiled as soccer squad snaps futility streak against Carabins

Clovis Fowo

MONTREAL -- Midfielder Clovis Fowo, a 19-year-old mechanical engineering sophomore from Paris, France, scored twice in his first career start, as McGill stunned the No.7-ranked Universite de Montreal Carabins 2-1 in men's university soccer at Stade CEPSUM, Sunday.

It was Montreal's first loss of the season and snapped McGill's 0-5-2 winless streak against the Carabins. It also marked McGill's first ever regular-season victory in 14 lifetime attempts on Carabins territory as they improved to 5-18-9 overall against their bitter rivals since UdeM joined the Quebec conference in 2001. Three of McGill's five victories have occurred during post-season play, including a 2-0 decision in the 2009 semifinal and identical 1-0 victories in the 2007 semifinal and in the 2002 league championship contest. The previous lone Redmen conquest in regular season play was a 3-1 decision at Molson Stadium, Sept. 25, 2011.

Reserve goalkeeper Thomas Daechsel, a junior from Kingston, Ont., who turned aside four of five shots for the win, was one of nine surprise starters made by McGill head coach Marc Mounicot in the aftermath of Friday's disappointing 4-2 loss at Laval.

"What we are trying to achieve this year is to return to the winning attitude that we haven't had for a few years and (the players on this new-look lineup) played a solid game with a lot of guts. It showed me that we are a cohesive group," said Mounicot. "We made the changes so we could compete with the physicality of the Carabins. And sometimes when you do that, you get an unexpected hero and we had that today with Clovis Fowo and he scored two beautiful goals. It was a tough physical game out on that field today and I have to congratulate our young guys for stepping up. It was very pleasing to see the way we played."

On the first goal, Fowis converted a crossing pass from midfielder Marc Palaci-Olgun, finding the net with a nice volley inside the far left post. The second goal came on a shot in the top corner from 30 yards out, off a little flick-pass from Alexander King, who had subbed in at the 55-minute mark.

"Clovis is coming back from a groin injury and was really surprised when I told him the day before that he would be starting. He's a team player, very well-liked by his teammates. I don't think that I've seen one of our players so excited to celebrate scoring a goal the way he did."

McGill now sits third in the seven-team RSEQ conference with a 3-2-0 record behind division-leading Laval (3-0-3) and second-place Montreal (3-1-1). The Redmen will host UQTR (0-3-2) on Friday (Sept. 29) at Molson Stadium.
