VICTORIA, B.C. – Julien Pouliot of Boucherville, Que., a rower from McGill University, won silver in the men's single at the 18th annual Canadian University Rowing Association championships, held at Elk Lake, on Sunday.

The Redmen finished fifth of 20 teams overall, while the Martlets were 14th on the women's side.

Complete Results

The  6-foot-1, 162-pounder completed the 1,750-metre course in seven minutes, 18.69 seconds.  Pouliot, 24, is a first-year certificate student in applied marketing. He joined the McGill rowing program this fall after graduating from Université Laval, where he was a distance runner in both track and cross-country.

Two other McGill boats finished fifth on the men's side -- the heavyweight single with Lucas de Gelder, a mechanical engineering junior from Vancouver, B.C., and the heavyweight pair, with De Gelder and Christian Dabrowski, a medical student from Montreal.

McGill's top result in the women's division was a seventh-place finish in the lightweight double, which featured Andreanne Cote, an occupational therapy sophomore from Greenfield Park, Que., and Marie-Pier Caron, a political science junior from St. Hubert, Que.

The UBC Thunderbirds men's team finished with 106 points to edge Victoria by four points in the team standings,  winning the national banner and the North Pacific Association of Amateur Oarsmen Trophy, while Brock took third with 85. Defending champion Western finished fourth with 80 points.

On the women's side, Western successfully defended their Challenge Cup team title, finishing with 117 points. The UBC Thunderbirds finished second (102) and UVic took third (93 points).

The most outstanding rower-of-the-year awards went to Carleton's Matthew Fournier and Western's Jill Moffatt.

UBC also swept the Coach of the Year Honours. Men's head coach Mike Pearce and women's head coach Craig Pond each received coach-of-the-year honours for their respective teams. Guelph's Dave Legére received the President's Award as person who has made the most outstanding contribution to rowing.

The Victoria Vikes claimed the Book of Honour Award as men's eight champions, while UBC Thunderbirds took the Jane Thornton Trophy as women's eight champs.

The 2015 Canadian University Rowing Championship will return out east to Antigonish, N.S., next fall as St. Francis Xavier will host the 19th annual event.
