Box Score MONTREAL --
Samuel Labrecque, a defenceman from Granby, Que., scored a power-play goal with just six seconds remaining as McGill rallied from a two-goal deficit to roar past the York University Lions in OUA men's hockey at McConnell Arena, Saturday.
The result avenged a 3-1 upset loss at York last year and improved McGill's overall record to 20-11-6 in 37 lifetime meeting against York. More importantly, it also extended McGill's current win streak to four and improved their OUA record to 6-2-0.
The Redmen, who had an astounding 98-39 advantage in attempted shots, including a lopsided 52-22 edge on net, thoroughly dominated the Lions everywhere but on the scoreboard.... that is, until the last dozen minutes of the game, when lightning struck three times.
York jumped into an early 2-0 first-period lead, on goals by rookies
Dylan Smoskowitz of Richmond Hill, Ont., and
Greg Milner of Watford, Ont., at 4:50 and 11:32. The first goal was credited to Smoskowitz, whose initial shot had been blocked by defenceman
Dominic Poulin at the top of the circle but the rebound was accidently slapped in for an "own" goal by McGill forward
Mathieu Pompei, who was attempting to clear the puck behind his net.
The Redmen, spent what seemed like the remainder of the game in York's end of the ice but couldn't seem to solve netminder
Chris Perugini, a junior from King City, Ont., who registered 49 saves.
However, once the Perugini puzzle was solved by Pompei, who made amends for his earlier miscue at 7:19 of the final period, it seemed only a matter of time before the momentum shift paid off.
David Rose then connected for a power-play marker, his seventh of the season, at 17:05, setting the stage for Labrecque's heroics. Rose is tied for fourth among OUA goal-scoring leaders
Labrecque, a recent transfer from the NCAA's Clarkson University, has now tallied five goals in eight league games, which ranks second-best among OUA rearguards.
"It was a real team victory and a test of our resolve," said acting head coach
David Urquhart, who was stepping up for second straight game while bench boss
Kelly Nobes is coaching with Team Canada at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge in Sarnia, Ont. "We have a lot of leaders, players who were captains on their junior teams and the guys didn't get frustrated, they just kept coming in waves and played like they knew they would win."
McGill netminder
Jacob Gervais-Chouinard, a sophomore from Sherbrooke, Que., who previously made 52 saves in a 3-2 double-overtime loss to Alberta at the CIS semifinals last spring, kicked out 20 of 22 for the win, improving to 4-1 on the season and 16-5 over his two OUA campaigns.
McGill was 2-for-6 on the power-play and killed on their lone penalty, a minor to rookie rearguard
Francis Lambert-Lemay. It was the team's lowest penalty total dating back 64 games overall, when they also had only one minor infraction in a 2-1 home-ice victory over RMC on Feb. 9, 2013.
McGill will be on the road for the next two weekends with games at Guelph (Nov. 7), Western (Nov. 8), Windsor (Nov. 14) and Lakehead (Nov.15). They return home to McConnell Arena the following week to face Ryerson (Nov. 21) and Toronto (Nov. 22).
REDMEN RAP: Centre
Cedric McNicoll, a former AHL player with Charlotte, Albany and Lake Erie, who joined the Redmen last year and earned OUA all-star status, was a late scratch with an undisclosed injury... He currently ranks second among OUA assist leaders with 13 in seven games...
Guillaume Monast, a 6-foot-2, 202-pound defenceman who played in the AHL for Texas before joining for McGill in 2012-13, has returned to the team after sitting out last year to focus on academics. The physical education junior from Montreal posted a 4-7-11 record with 32 PIMs in 34 games during his first year at McGill... Monast, who will wear No.33 and is expected to suit up next weekend, now gives the current Redmen roster four players with AHL experience, including goaltenders
Jacob Gervais-Chouinard (Hamilton) and
Karel St-Laurent (Providence)... That list grows to five if you include coach
David Urquhart, who played parts of three seasons in the AHL (Hartford, Hamilton) after graduating from McGill in 2008.
