Box Score MONTREAL -- The damp weather inside McConnell Arena may have been frightful to the visiting Brock University Badgers, but it was rather delightful for McGill as the hockey Redmen cashed in plenty of goodies with a haunting 8-1 victory in OUA action on a Halloween main event billed as "Freaky Friday".
It was the third straight win for the Redmen, who improved to 24-4-2 lifetime against Brock, outscoring the Badgers 146-72 since the series rendezvous in 1988.
McGill, which had a 41-33 edge in shots, scored two power-play goals and added a pair of shorthanded markers in an impressive all-round performance under the guidance of acting head coach
David Urquhart, filling in for bench boss
Kelly Nobes, who was busy guiding Canada to a 4-3 overtime win against Sweden in pre-tournament play at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge in Sarnia, Ont.
Forwards
Jonathan Brunelle,
David Rose and
Max Le Sieur tallied two goals apiece for the Redmen, with singles going to defenceman
Etienne Boutet and centre
Guillaume Langelier-Parent (shorthanded).
One of
Le Sieur's markers was also shorthanded as the Redmen thrived on special teams, snuffing out 8-of-9 shorthanded situations and striking paydirt on the power-play with an efficient 3-for-3 performance.
The Redmen led 3-1 after the first period and 6-1 after two.
"It feels special to beat Brock as I'm originally from Thorold, where they are based (in southern Ontario)," said Urquhart a former all-Canadian rearguard and captain of the Redmen who recently hung up his skates on a six-year pro career in the ECHL, AHL and in Italy where he won a league championship, to accept a full-time assistant coaching position at McGill. He took over in August for long-time assistant
Dan Jacob, now with Blainville of the QMJHL.
"It also means a lot to me because our guys showed a lot of character with Nobesy out of town. To come out with a performance like that, it was a real 60-minute effort and that was great to see because we have been stressing that in practice all week... I was proud of our guys that they didn't let Brock back in the game after they scored late in the first to close the gap to 3-1. We continued to pressure, play with the same effort and pushed the pace to bury that team. That's the kind of killer-instinct we need to be successful, when we have a team that is on the ropes, it's important to not let them back in the game. That was a key stepping stone for us."
Goaltender
Karel St-Laurent made 32 saves to collect the win between the pipes for McGill, improving his record to 2-1-0 on the season. Brock starter
Clint Windsor starter was beaten five times on 19 shots before being yanked at 8:58 of the middle stanza. He was replaced by
Adrian Volpe who conceded three goals on 22 shots.
McGill, which improved to 5-2 in OUA play, will host the York Lions (3-5-0) on Saturday at 7 p.m. Brock (2-4-1), which was supposed to be playing in Ottawa on Saturday, heads back home to St. Catharines as all games scheduled against the Gee-Gees were cancelled this year in the wake of uOttawa's suspension of their program. The Badgers will play twice at Lakehead next weekend.
REDMEN RAP: Nobes will miss four Redmen games while coaching the Canada Black team, one of three Canadian entires at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge... Other McGill games he will miss include Satuday's home affair versus York (Nov. 2), plus next week's road trip to Guelph (Nov. 7) and Western (Nov. 8)... The international tournament underwent a name change from the Quebec Esso Cup (in 2011) and most recently, Hockey Canada decided to change the format of its own team entries into the tournament. For the first time in 2014, rather than sending five provincial teams (Ontario, Quebec, Pacific, Atlantic and Western) to compete, Hockey Canada has opted to combine players from across the nation into three competitive teams - Red, White and Black.
