Martlets soccer squad settles for scoreless draw with cross-town Carabins on "seniors" soiree

MONTREAL -- Goaltender Cassandra Fafalios of Richmond Hill, Ont., earned her league-leading fourth shutout of the season but the McGill women's soccer team had to settle for a 0-0 draw against the No.9-ranked Montreal Carabins on "Seniors" Sunday at Percival Molson Stadium.

The deadlock maintained McGill's precarious grasp on the fourth and final playoff berth in the eight-team RSEQ conference. The Martlets, who have a 4-6-3 record, sit one point ahead of Concordia (3-4-5), with two games left before playoffs.

"We dominated against the second-best team in the league, a side that is very dangerous in producing counter-attacks," said head coach Jose-Luis Valdes. "We gave them very few chances to score, which is very positive for us."

On paper, the stats sheet showed a distinct advantage for the Martlets, who maintained 62 per cent of the ball possession and outshot their rivals by a 4-0 margin. They also led in first touches (745 to 458) and pass completions (61 per cent) but just couldn't capitalize on their chances, especially when it came to putting the ball in the Montreal net as they were stymied by goalkeeper Sarah Boucher, a nimble 5-foot-5 junior from Quebec City, who made four saves.

McGill's magic number to clinch a playoff berth is six points. Any combination of McGill wins or Concordia losses equaling two will do the trick. McGill will close out their regular season schedule with road games against sixth-place UQTR (3-7-2) on Oct. 24 and seventh-place UQAM (1-7-4) on Oct. 26. The Stingers (3-4-5) have their work cut out for them with tough road games against the second-place Carabins (7-1-4) and division-leading Laval (11-1-0)..

With Sherbrooke, Montreal and Laval all ahead of the Martlets in the standings, Valdes says his team is peaking at the right time, a hopeful sign with the playoff round starting Oct. 31 and culminating at the national championships to be played in Quebec City, Nov. 6-9.

MARTLET MURMURS: Four seniors were feted prior to the game, with Coach Valdes thanking them for their dedication to the Martlet program. The graduating seniors included goalkeeper Elissa McCarron, a native of Halifax, N.S., who joined the team this year after transferring from Mt. Allison. Elissa is studying civil law at McGill and is in her fifth and final year of CIS eligibility... Amanda Gonzalez, a native Montrealer and a physical education senior, who played two seasons at McGill after transferring from Concordia... Hannah Kirby, a fifth-year midfielder and a mathematics major from Kanata, Ont., who played in her 49th regular season contest in a McGill uniform... And Meghan Bourque, a midfielder from Burlington, Ont., who served as team captain in each of the last two years and has 61 games under her belt.
