MONTREAL -- The McGill men's soccer team battled Montreal to a 0-0 draw at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

It marked the first time in school history that the Redmen went undefeated in a season against their bitter cross-town rivals. McGill posted a 1-0-1 record versus Montreal after snapping an 0-5-2 winless streak against the Carabins with a 2-1 victory on Sept. 21.

It was a moral victory for the Redmen, who played the last 20 minutes down one player as senior midfielder Marc Palaci-Olgun was red-carded after being assessed a pair of yellow cards in the 65th and 73rd minutes.

"I think that a tie was a fair result for both teams even if we had the better scoring chances in the game," Redmen head coach Marc Mounicot said. "They were only dangerous on set plays and their 'keeper made some quality saves to keep us off the scoresheet. I liked the reaction of our team after being down one man (due to the red card). They showed resilience and good team spirit - two key elements that we will need for the rest of the season. We still have a chance to finish third in a very tough conference and we will take it game-by-game."

Despite the scoreless draw, the match featured numerous scoring chances, with McGill holding a 15-13 edge in attempted shots, including an 8-5 margin in shots on net. Goalkeeper Max Leblond, a 5-foot-10 senior from Lille, France, made five saves to merit McGill's second shutout of the season, their first since a 1-0 win against Sherbrooke in their regular season opener.

Carabins 'keeper Mario Gerges, a 6-foot-4 freshman from Greenfield Park, Que., registered eight saves for his goose-egg.

Sunday's game also marked the final regular season home game for seniors James Allester and Sebastian Munro, both natives of Vancouver, B.C., as well as Massimo Di Ioia of Pte. Claire, Que., and Alexander King of Cambridge, England.

"I have to congratulate our four seniors... All of them have contributed to this program and all have brought excellence and left us with fond memories of their time in a McGill jersey," Mounicot said.

The third-place Carabins (5-2-4) remained three points ahead of McGill (5-4-1) with one game remaining against Concordia (Oct. 24) before post-season play. McGill closes out their schedule on the road with games at UQTR (Oct. 24) and at UQAM (Oct. 26).
