MONTREAL -- Cedric McNicoll of Thetford Mines, Que., collected four points and defenceman Samuel Labrecque of Granby, Que., tallied twice as McGill overwhelmed the visiting Nipissing University Lakers 8-1 to kick-off Homecoming Week festivities in men's university hockey at McConnell Arena, Friday.

The Redmen led 3-0 after one period and 6-0 late in the middle stanza before Nipissing's Jaret Smith  of Red Deer, Alta., broke the goose-egg at 16:13 on the power-play. McGill had a 44-34 margin in shots. They were highly-productive on special teams, going 3-for-6 on the power-play. McGill also killed off five of six manpower disadvantages and added a shorthanded goal.

McNicoll, an accounting junior in his second-year player with the Redmen who merited all-conference honours last season, was one of seven McGill goal scorers, scored the game-winner and added three helpers.

Rounding out the scoring for McGill was rookie defenceman Dominic Poulin, along with forwards David Rose, Simon Tardif-Richard (shorthanded), Max Le Sieur and Jonathan Bonneau, a first-year transfer from St. Thomas University.

Goaltender Jacob Gervais-Chouinard kicked aside 33 of 34 shots for the win, improving his record to 2-0 on the season. The Lakers deployed two puck-stoppers. Kirk Rafuse started and took the loss, allowing four goals on 17 shots before being yanked after being beaten at the 57-second mark in the middle frame. Cole Holowenko played the remainder on the game and also conceded four goals, on 27 shots.

The contest featured 78 minutes in penalties, including 40 of which were doled out in a fracas after the final whistle. Nipissing's Doug Harvey, who received a whopping 33 penalty minutes, including 29 in the post-game melee, including a minor for instigating a fight and a gross misconduct for removing his helmet to engage with McGill defenceman Hugo Laporte. As per CIS rules, the penalties called will result in an automatic minimum five-game suspension for Harvey but a new rule adopted in the off season will allow Laporte to play without suspension because of the instigator infraction.
