Green's goals gain soccer Martlets shutout win over Gaiters

LENNOXVILLE, Que. — Rebecca Green of Green's Harbour, Nfld., booted the first of her two goals just 17 seconds in, establishing a dominant tone early, as the McGill Martlets rolled to a 3-0 victory over the Bishop's Gaiters women's soccer team at Coulter Field on Friday.

With three games remaining before playoffs, it was a must-win affair for the Martlets (4-5-2), who are tied with Concordia (3-3-5) for the fourth and final playoff berth in the eight-team RSEQ conference. The cellar-dwelling Gaiters dropped to 1-9-1 and were officially eliminated from post-season play.

McGill had a 13-3 edge in shots on goal and a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Green, a fourth-year physiology major, found the twine again on an unassisted tally in the 34th minute, giving McGill some insurance going into the second half. The 5-foot-5 striker now leads the team with five markers, which has her tied for fifth among league-leaders in the RSEQ conference.

Martlets goalkeeper Cassandra Fafalios of Richmond Hill, Ont., meanwhile, faced a Bishop's penalty kick midway through the first half, but held her ground and made the save to keep the two-goal lead intact. She was named as McGill's player of the game, finishing with three saves to register her third save and improve her record to 4-3-2.

McGill's ability to control the pace of the play, however, was apparent apart from the scoresheet. The Martlets limited Bishop's to just 35% possession, almost doubling the Gaiters in both average and total time controlling the ball.

"After [the penalty shot], we just dominated. We controlled the game, we were comfortable with the ball at our feet," McGill head coach Jose-Luis Valdes said. "We were getting lots of shots on goal, attacking from left, right and centre... Every time they got the ball back, within one or two passes, we were covering right away, taking the ball back, and then attacking again and again."

Sarah Bourque of Burlington, Ont., put away McGill's third goal in the 65th minute, while rookie Audrey-Ann Coughlan of Longueuil, Que., picked up a pair of assists.

BU 'keeper Molly Bucholtz made 10 saves in a losing cause for the Gaiters and was named player of the match for her side. Bishop's (1-9-1) plays at UQTR (2-7-2) on Sunday and a victory there would all but eliminate the Patriotes from participating in playoffs.

McGill returns home for their final home match, as they get set to take on local rivals, the Montreal Carabins, at Molson Stadium on Sunday at 6 p.m. The Martlets will be looking to avenge a 1–0 road loss to the Carabins in their only previous rendez-vous. It will be the final regular season home game for four members of the Martlets, namely fifth-year veterans Meghan Bourque and Hannah Kirby, as well as Amanda Gonzalez, a Concordia transfer who played two seasons at McGill and Elissa McCarron, who joined the team this year after transferring from Mt. Allison.
