MONTREAL -- Chloe Malette of Pte. Claire, Que., scored the game-winning goal in the 64th minute and goalkeeper Martine Julien made six saves as the No.6-ranked Montreal Carabins blanked McGill 1-0 to open up the RSEQ university women's soccer season before a crowd of 544 at Molson Stadium, Thursday.
The Martlets had an 11-8 margin in shots directed towards the net and held a a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks but were unable to solve the UdeM 'keeper.
Julien, a fifth-year senior from Lachine, Que., and teammate Jacynthe Tessier both drew yellow cards over the final 12 minutes of play.
"It was disappointing to lose our home opener but after only two-plus weeks of preparation, I am happy with how we are progressing in implementing our new system," said
Jose-Luis Valdes, in his first season as head coach of the Martlets. "Looking back at how far we've come since our first exhibition game, we are moving in the right direction."
McGill 'netminder
Victoria Muccilli, a junior from Mississauga, Ont., was beaten once on two shots and took the loss.
"The players are buying into our new philosophy," added Valdes. "They are keen on regaining possession of the ball back the moment we lose it. Also, our possession stats clearly show that we are moving forward and into striking distance if you look at the amount of shots we took."
The Martlets (0-1) will play at Sherbrooke on Sunday at 1 p.m., while the Carabins (1-0) will host Concordia the same day at 3 p.m.
