MONTREAL --
Massimo Di Ioia, a first-year striker from Blainville, Que., scored once and set up the game-winner as McGill rallied to edge Concordia 2-1 in RSEQ men's university soccer at Concordia Stadium, Sunday.
The win moved McGill back in position to fight for a playoff berth as the Redmen improved to 2-3-2. They are tied with UQTR for the fourth and final playoff berth in the seven-team RSEQ conference but could still finish anywhere from first to last place.
Concordia opened the scoring in the 13th minute when
Massimo Tartaglia beat
Redmen 'keeper
Max Leblond.
Di Ioia then took control, converting a cross from
Alexander King in the 23rd minute.
A key substitution 10 minutes into the second stanza paid off instantly as
Mawuena Mallett came off the bench in the 55th minute and converted on a nice through ball from Di Ioia just a minute later for what proved to be the winning tally.
"We had a very shaky start, played poorly in the first 20 minutes and the Stingers took advantage of our defensive errors to open the scoring," said Redmen head coach
Marc Mounicot..
"But it seemed to serve as a wakeup call because we were able to settle things down. After Di Ioia scored, we should have a two or three-goal cushion before halftime but we missed on a penalty shot and two breakaways.
"It was not pretty but we defended well until the end and our team deserved that win today. Too many times this season we deserved a better fatebut today we managed to get the job done. We played under a lot of pressure because we really needed to win today and we got that with a good team effort over the last 60 minutes."
The Redmen will make the short jaunt around the slopes of Mt. Royal to take on the Montreal Carabins on Oct. 4 at 8:30 p.m.
