Soccer Martlets battle No.2 Laval to a draw, extend streak to five

MONTREAL -- Lea Chastenay-Joseph of Donnacona, Que., pounced on a McGill turnover in the box and tallied the equalizer with 10 minutes remaining as No. 2 ranked Laval battled McGill to a 1-1 draw in RSEQ women's university soccer at Molson Stadium, Friday.

The result extended undefeated streaks for both teams, with division-leading Laval improving to 6-0-1, while the Martlets run is now 4-0-1 after dropping their first two contests of the regular season.

Kelsey Wilson, a defender from Pincourt, Que., opened the scoring for McGill in the 11th minute of play. The history senior connected on a free kick taken at the 10-yard marker that sailed from the sideline to the far side, which fooled Laval goalkeeper Joelle Morasse, a 5-foot-4 native of Quebec City, who was distracted by a charging Martlets player.

McGill had a 5-3 edge in shots on net but Morasse came up with four saves to preserve the tie. Veteran 'keeper Victoria Muccilli, a senior from Mississauga, was credited with a pair of saves to collect the tie for the Martlets.

"We're very happy with the way we defended against Laval," said McGill head coach Jose-Luis Valdes about the division-leading Rouge et Or who lead the Quebec league in scoring with 30 goals in seven games. "They are very strong tactically speaking and possess lots of speed throughout their lineup.

We played a well-organized system throughout the 90 minutes. After taking the lead, we decided to alter our forecheck and stay back to avoid being exposed to their speed."

In other games around the RSEQ on Friday, Sherbrooke outlasted visiting Concordia 6-4 in a high-scoring affair, while Montreal slammed UQAM 5-1 and UQTR edged Bishop's 2-1 in Lennoxville.

McGill (4-2-1), which solidified their grasp on the fourth and final playoff berth, will travel across town to take on Concordia (2-5-0) on Sunday at 3 p.m., followed by a trip around Mt. Royal on Oct. 4 to confront the second-place Montreal Carabins (5-1-1).
