Laval lands last-minute marker to mesmerize McGill men's soccer squad


MONTREAL -- Nafi Dicko-Raynauld, a senior defender from Montreal, scored in the 89th minute as Laval salvaged a point from the jaws of defeat in a 1-1 tie against the McGill men's soccer team at Molson Stadium, Friday.

The Redmen had led for almost an hour on a nifty marker by Massimo Di Ioia, a first-year striker from Blainville, Que., who converted a corner kick from Clovis Fowo to score his league-leading fifth goal of the season in the 31st minute of play.

It was a painful blow for McGill's playoff hopes as the Redmen tumbled to fifth-place with a 1-3-2 record, three points behind UQTR (2-2-2), which sits in the fourth and final playoff berth. A victory would have put McGill ahead of UQTR and only one point in arrears of third-place Laval, which improved to 2-1-3.

Goaltender J.F. Desrosiers made three saves to preserve the tie for the Rouge et Or, who held a 6-4 advantage in shots on net. Redmen netminder Max Leblond, a native of France, was credited with five saves.

McGill will have to regroup now for an upward battle to gain ground over the last six games of the regular season. The Redmen can re-ignite their playoff hopes with a virtual must-win affair at Concordia (2-4-0) on Sunday (Sept. 29) at 1 p.m. before heading into the lion's den against the No.3-ranked Montreal Carabins (4-1-1) on Oct. 4.

In other games around the RSEQ on Friday, UQAM surprised Montreal 3-0 and Concordia blanked Sherbrooke 2-0.
