MONTREAL –
Meghan Bourque of Burlington, Ont., tallied twice and assisted on the game winner – all in a 10-minute span – as the McGill women's soccer team rallied for three consecutive goals en route to a 3-1 victory over visiting Concordia at Molson Stadium, Sunday.
The Martlets had a 14-7 advantage in shots directed towards the net en route to evening their record at 2-2 and moving three points ahead of Concordia, which dropped to 1-3.
After a scoreless first half, Concordia's Elizabeth Allard broke the ice in the 54th minute of play. Bourque netted the equalizer in the 64th minute, then set up freshman
Alexandra Tinfow of Westfield, N.J., for the game-winning tally five minutes later. She added a back-breaking insurance marker in the 73rd minute.
"We were very disciplined and stuck to the game plan for the entire 90 minutes," said
Jose-Luis Valdes, head coach of the Martlets. "Meghan, among others, had a great game and it appears that she has adjusted well to her new position."
Bourque, a 20-year-old physiology senior, has been shifted from midfielder to striker this season.
"We needed a striker who was good at hanging onto the ball consistently in the offensive zone and she fit the bill," explained Valdes of the move. "She is very good technically and cool pressure."
Goalkeeper
Sarah Dubois, a chemical engineering freshman from Edmonton, made seven saves to collect her first career victory in regular season play.
"I'm pleased to see our rookies playing at the same level as our veterans," said Valdes. "It's very promising for the future and also allows us to play our entire squad regularly."
'Keeper Saby Dagenais of Laval, Que., made six saves in a losing cause for the Stingers.
The McGill women are now tied with Bishop's (2-2) for fourth-place in the eight-team RSEQ conference and will look to extend a three-game undefeated streak on Sept. 20 when they play the Gaiters in Lennoxville, before heading across town to take on UQAM (0-3-1) on Sept. 22 at the Centre sportif Bois-de-Boulogne.
