MONTREAL --
Nouhoum Namake-Samake got a lucky break on Friday the 13th and scored on a penalty-shot in the 61st minute as the defending league champion UQTR Patriotes escaped with a 1-1 draw against McGill in a hotly-disputed men's soccer game at Molson Stadium.
In all, five players were booked, including McGill netminder and co-captain
Max Leblond, who was tossed on a controversial play in the 59th minute. When the dust settled,
Thomas Daeschel, a sophomore from Kingston, Ont., took over in the McGill net but had no chance against Namake-Samake, a native of Mali, on the ensuing penalty shot.
"We were in control of the game until that incident," said
Marc Mounicot, head coach of the Redmen. "Our players adjusted well but that call changed the game. Despite being a man down the rest of the way, we still had more chances to score than they did."
McGill had opened the scoring in the 21st minute when defender
Dominic Bell, a law freshman from Waterloo, Ont., converted a pass from Belarusian
Valentin Radevich, a first-year transfer from the Montreal Carabins, who is now studying medicine at McGill.
Daeschel, who was credited with the tie, made four saves in his 31-minute stint between the pipes.
Raphael Belanger-Vaillancourt made a pair of saves to register the draw for the Patriotes.
The Redmen (0-2-1) will host Concordia (1-1-0) on Sunday at 5 p.m., in a crucial game that was moved to late afternoon to accomodate the Tour de l'isle Grand Prix cycling race which will dominate the streets around Mont Royal for much of the day.
"This group of youngsters deserves better outcomes than we've had over the last few games," said Mounicot. "But we will need to show some urgency in our next match."
UQTR (1-0-2) will take on UQAM (1-1-0) at Stade Hebert on Sunday at 1 p.m.
