TORONTO –
Greg Hetherington, a former star receiver with the McGill University Redmen who went on to play in the Canadian Football League, will be holding an open house and offering free classes for the grand opening of his new company Fuel Training Club, in Toronto's King West neighbourhood, May 11-12, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“Health is a lifestyle choice but it also needs to fit with who you are,” says Hetherington, a native of Toronto who graduated from McGill in 2007 with an education degree, majoring in kinesiology. “You do not need to be a full-time athlete to look and feel like one. Our approach is to integrate fitness into
your lifestyle. This is where fitness meets lifestyle. You work hard, play hard and here, you train hard. We're serious about fitness as the fuel for healthy living. With functional exercise and energizing classes, we will help you be better.”
Hetherington, recently named by blogTO.com as one of Toronto's top 10 fitness trainers, was a 6-foot-4, 220-pound slotback at McGill, where he played from 2002 to 2006, earning CIS all-Canadian second-team honours in his senior year. He was drafted in the sixth round (46th overall) by Calgary during the 2007 CFL Draft and spent one year with the Stampeders, then signed with the B.C. Lions, where he played two seasons before retiring from professional football in 2009.
His Fuel Training Club offers the best of all worlds, featuring state-of-the-art equipment, a unique training philosophy and eco-friendly measures through the facility. A small group training format provides the intimacy of personal training with the motivation of a group. The facility uses non-traditional, proven training equipment including: Woodway curve treadmills, airdynes, undulating ropes, kettlebells, power blocks, bumper plates, TRX's, gym rings, running sleds and more.
“There is no paper here,” says Hetherington, an advocate of 'greening by example' whose company offers the ability to track progress online. “None of our equipment plugs into a wall. You are the power source. We are also completely paperless so there is a minimal environmental footprint. As well, we have sourced and use only water-saving toilets, energy-efficient hand dryers and energy-efficient fixtures.”
During his McGill career, he registered 14 career touchdown receptions to establish an all-time school record (since broken). In 30 contests with the Redmen, Hetherington caught 116 passes for 1,690 yards and a 14.6 average per catch. He still holds the McGill record for the fastest TD scored from the start of a game (30 seconds), hauling in a 76-yard toss from quarterback Dave Campbell in 2003.
Other McGill highlights include winning the Charlie Baillie Award twice as most outstanding team player (2005 and 2006) as well as receiving the Dan Pronyk memorial trophy as most outstanding offensive player in 2006. Hetherington also played in two CIS East-West Bowl games (2004 and 2006).
