Sylla scores 18 at Martlet hoopsters dump Citadins, improve to 10-3

MONTREAL – Mariam Sylla scored a game-high 18 points, leading McGill to a 72-52 victory over the UQAM Citadins in Quebec university women's basketball at Love Competition hall, Saturday.

The result improved McGill's record to 10-3 atop the RSEQ standings, with three games remaining before playoffs.
The Martlets led 20-12 after the opening quarter, 35-22 at the half and 56-36 after three.

Sylla, who pulled down eight rebounds, shot 7-for-12 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.

Point-guard Francoise Charest contributed 14 points, primarily as a result of a 4-for-6 performance from beyond the arc. Marie-Pier Bastrash had 10 points, four rebounds and three steals, while Anneth Him-Lazarenko added eight points and three rebounds. Dianna Ross and Arianne Duchesne each had six points.

For the Citadins, Camille Michaud led the way with 17 points and Elina Conduche added nine.

McGill, which held a 27-21 rebounding advantage and a 13-8 difference in steals, shot 47.5 per cent from the field (28/59), a sizzling 53.8 from the three-point arc (7/13) and a very efficient 81.8 from the charity stripe. UQAM shot 32.7, went 1-for-13 from the arc and connected on only 68.2 from the line.

The division-leading Martlets will host cellar-dwelling Bishop's (0-12) on Feb. 16 in a 6 p.m. tipoff. UQAM, which dropped to 8-5, plays at Concordia (8-4) in a Valentine's Day affair.
