QUEBEC CITY – Rookie Mariam Sylla and veteran Anneth Him-Lazarenko tallied 16 points apiece as visiting McGill cruised to a 59-45 victory over Laval in Quebec university women's basketball action at Centre PEPS, Thursday.

It was McGill's sixth straight conquest over their long-time rivals, since a 74-68 setback in Montreal on Nov. 12, 2011.

The result spoiled an attempt by Laval head coach Linda Marquis, a former McGill all-star guard, to collect her 500th career victory behind the Rouge et Or bench.

More improtantly, it improved McGill's record to 9-3 and put the Martlets into sole possession of first place atop the RSEQ conference standings. Laval, which sits fourth in the five-team conference, dropped to 5-7 and all but put them out of contention to finish any higher. Should the standings remain that way, the two rivals would meet in the league's sudden-death semifinal on Feb. 27.

The teams were deadlocked at 10-10 after the opening quarter but McGill took control for the remainder of the contest, leading 27-20 at the half and 44-35 after three quarters.

“The girls played well,” said McGill head coach Ryan Thorne. “We made good decisions, both inside and out. I was quite pleased with our defensive play, especially in holding their scoring leader (Marie-Pascale Nadeau) to only six points.”

Sylla, a 6-foot-1 centre from Guinea, who reached double figures in scoring for the seventh consecutive outing, also pulled down a game-high eight rebounds and was credited with a pair of steals. She shot 7-for-12 from the field and made two of three free-throws.

Him Lazarenko, a fifth-year veteran from Panama City who returned to the lineup after missing three games with injuries, grabbed seven rebounds, shot 6-for-16 from the floor and went a perfect 4-for-4 from the line.

“It was nice to have her back in the lineup,” said Thorne of his 5-foot-10 power forward. “She gives us such flexibility to have a strong aggressive game up front as she is tough to defend, especially after receiving the ball inside (the key).”

Montrealer Dianna Ros contributed 10 points, a game-high six assists, a pair of steals and had one rebound.

The Martlets had a 30-29 edge in rebounding and a 10-3 advantage in steals.

Laval was led by Jannie Jacques and Elyse Jobin with 13 and seven points, respectively.

McGill shot 42.1 per cent from the floor (24/57), 31.3 from three-point range (5/16) and made six of 12 shots from the line. The Rouge et Or shot 33.3, 18.8 and 61.5, respectively.

With four games remaining before playoffs, the Martlets (9-3) will host third-place UQAM (8-4) on Saturday (Feb. 9) at 2 p.m., while Laval (5-7) will travel to last-place Bishop's (0-12) on Feb. 13.

The two teams will cross paths once more – on Feb. 21 at Love Competition Hall – before post-season play begins.
