Mariam Sylla scored a game-high 15 points and pulled down seven rebounds as McGill humbled Bishop's 72-31 in Quebec university women's basketball at Love Competition Hall, Saturday.

Eleven of McGill's 12 players scored and the 41-point spread was McGill's largest margin of victory over any team since a 93-42 victory at Bishop's on Jan., 24, 1997, a span of 476 games.
It was a close contest through the opening quarter with the Martlets holding a slim 13-12 lead but they outscored BU 13-3 and 19-4 in the second and third quarters, respectively, to enter the final stanza with a resounding 49-19 lead.
Sylla, a 6-foot-1 pharmacology freshman from Guinea, shot 6-for-12 from the floor and 3-for-8 from the free-throw line. She was also credited with a pair of steals and a blocked shot in only 24 minutes of court time.
Teammates
Dianna Ros of Montreal and
Valerie L'Ecuyer of Mirabel, Que., each had nine points, while
Marie-Pier Bastrash of Trois-Rivières, Que., and
Helene Bibeau of St. Bruno, Que., added eight apiece, with the latter registering seven rebounds.
Only five Gaiters registered points, led by Gabrielle Chamberland of Sherbrooke, Que., with nine and Riley-Michelle Shkimba of Kingston, Ont., who had eight.
McGill had a 48-24 edge in rebounding, a 16-11 difference in steals and a 24-17 advantage in turnovers. With the large lead, McGill went to the bench early and often and their subs outscored BU by a 32-3 margin.
The Martlets connected on 37.7 per cent of their shots from the floor (26/69), 31.6 from three-point range (6/19) and only 53.8 from the line (14/26). Bishop's shot 21.8 from the field (12/55) and 16.1 from the arc (5/31). They only went to the charity stripe twice and made both attempts.
McGill, which moved into sole possession of first place in the five-team RSEQ conference with an 11-3 record, two points ahead of Concordia (10-4). The Martlets have matched their win total of last year when they won the regular-season pennant with an 11-5 record. McGill will close out the regular season with a home game against fourth-place Laval (7-7) on Feb. 21 and a road contest at third-place UQAM (8-7) on Feb. 23.
MARTLET MURMURS: Sylla entered the game ranked third in the RSEQ scoring race, averaging 14.8 points per game… She trails UQAM's Emie Simard (17.6) and Concordia's Kaylah Barrett (15.0)… Sylla is also second among conference rebounding leaders with 9.7 rpg, seventh in free-throw percentage (75.8%) and second in blocked shots (11)… Bastrash is third among league leaders in field-goal shooting (43.6%) and second in three-point shooting (50.0%)… Ross leads the conference in assists (3.6 apg).
