MONTREAL – Mariam Sylla, a native of Guinea, posted her seventh “double-double” in 11 league games but it was all for naught as No.10-ranked Concordia survived a fourth-quarter scare and bounced back to defeat McGill 71-66 in Quebec university women's basketball action before 750 at Love Competition Hall, Friday.

The win moved Concordia into a tie with McGill for first-place atop the RSEQ conference standings. Both teams are 8-3 with five games remaining before playoffs.

The game served as McGill's annual “Shoot for the Cure” fundraiser for breast cancer and raised $1,500. Combined with the women's volleyball team, which held a “Dig for the Cure” game last semester, the two events raised $3,400 for the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation.

Sylla, who is arguably the leading candidate for CIS rookie-of-the-year honours, tallied 23 points and 11 rebounds, to go along with a pair of blocks and a steal. She shot 8-for-21 from the floor, 0-for-1 from the arc and 7-for-9 from the foul-line.

The lead changed hands 12 times and the cross-town rivals were knotted at 16-16 after the opening quarter but Concordia turned it up a notch in the second, outscoring the Martlets 26-18 to take a 42-34 lead into halftime. They expanded that to 61-45 after three quarters, then spent the final stanza in neutral as the Martlets roared back to take a heart-stopping 64-63 advantage with three minutes remaining.

Tamara Pinard-Devas then hit a couple of jumpers to put the Stingers ahead 67-64 and the Martlets were forced to foul in the final 38 seconds. Kaylah Barrett made all four of her freebies down the stretch and the brilliant Martlet comeback was snuffed out.

Barrett led the Stingers offence with 16 points, including a perfect 10-for-10 performance from the charity stripe. She was one of four Concordia players to reach double figures in scoring. Marilyse Roy-Viau added 14, while Richelle Gregoire had 13 and Ashley Clarke netted 10.

Joining Sylla on the McGill side was Helene Bibeau (17) and Dianna Ross (15).

The Martlets had a 37-22 edge in rebounding but committed 16 turnovers, which led directly to 21 Concordia points, compared to nine by the Stingers which led to 11 points. The visitors also had a 26-4 advantage in points off the bench.

McGill shot 35.9 per cent from the floor (23/64), went 4-for-16 from three-point range and connected on 76.2 from the line (16/21). The Stingers replied on 37.1, 38.5 and 83.3, respectively.

Concordia will host Laval (4-6) on Sunday (Feb.2) at 6 p.m., while the Martlets will travel to Quebec City on Feb. 7 to play fourth-place Laval before hosting third-place UQAM (7-4) on Feb. 9 at 2 p.m.
