OTTAWA – The Quebec champion McGill Martlets will have seven athletes competing this Saturday when the top university cross-country runners in the country gather in London, Ont., for the 2013 CIS championships.
Western University hosts the competition for the second straight year at the Thames Valley Golf Course. A total of 141 athletes from 27 schools are set to compete at noon in the women's six-kilometre race (increased by 1 km this season), while 131 runners from 23 institutions are scheduled to be at the starting line for the 10 km men's event at 1 p.m.
Across the CIS conferences, the Guelph Gryphons swept both OUA titles, while the Dalhousie women and St. Francis Xavier men were crowned AUS champions. In the RSEQ conference, the McGill women and Laval men once again prevailed.
"The key for us this year is that both our conference championship and the CIS nationals have been extended from a five-kilometre distance to a six-kilometre race," said McGill coach
Dennis Barrett. "Our girls are not necessarily that speedy over 5k but we feel that they are stronger and can maintain a good pace over a longer distance and it showed in the two 6k races that we ran this year."
McGill athletes registered to compete include
Jessica Porfilio, a third-year nursing major from Longueuil, Que.,
Jullien Flynn, a biology junior from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., freshman
Alison Barwick, another nursing major who hails from Pte. Claire, Que., freshman
Georgia Hamilton of Orillia, Ont.,
Madeleine Williams, a third-year law student from Edmonton, Alta.,
Evelyn Anderson, a marketing junior from Calgary and
Linda Dumalo, a nutritional science freshman from Sarnia, Ont.
To say that Guelph has dominated CIS cross country in recent years would be a major understatement.
The Gryphons have swept the national team banners each of the past seven seasons and are riding an eight-year championship streak in the women's race, all CIS records.
In individual competition, their female runners have captured the last two gold medals, including Andrea Seccafien a year ago and Geneviève Lalonde in 2011, while on the men's side, Guelph had claimed four straight titles before Regina's Kelly Wiebe put an end to that streak 12 months ago, when the Gryphons had to "settle" for four finishers in the top seven, including the silver and bronze medals.
Guelph is the overwhelming favourite to take the team banners once again on Saturday following a dominating performance at the OUA conference championships held on Oct. 26 in Hamilton, where the Gryphons swept the women's and men's titles for the ninth straight campaign, placing five female runners in the top seven and monopolizing the men's podium.
"We feel good. Racing at Thames Valley is always meaningful, it being the most established course in CIS with many memorable battles fought on its rolling hills," said Guelph head coach Dave Scott Thomas. "This year's meet is even more poignant as it is the last go round for Bob Vigars, the Western Mustangs coach and a legend in CIS.
"These are the two strongest teams we've put on the line. Every one of our athletes is in prime fitness physically and mentally, and needs to be as they square off against the best harriers in the country, all gunning for precious team points. Our expectations are simple: attempt to extend our winning streak of national titles for both women and men, and beyond that, to fill as many of the all-Canadian spots with Gryphons as possible."
Individually, StFX's Melissa Hardy and Saint Mary's John Kuto claimed AUS gold, while UQTR's Sarah Bergeron-Larouche and Laval's Charles Philibert-Thiboutot triumphed in Quebec.
There are no cross country championships in Canada West. Results at the CIS meet determine the conference's individual and team champions. A year ago, the Victoria Vikes finished fourth in both the CIS women's and men's standings.
"The team to date has been running very well, they all worked hard over the summer and the results reflect that," said StFX head coach Bernie Chisholm. "We are hoping to improve on last year's performance and cracking the top 10 is a realistic goal for this team."
Laval finished second in the men's standings at last year's CIS championships and head coach Félix-Antoine Lapointe is confident his troops can deliver again on Saturday.
"Our men had a great season and we hope to resume our success this weekend in London. The CIS competition has been our main goal all season and everyone is ready to go. Charles Philibert-Thiboutot is undefeated this fall is the RSEQ and he should be among the top contenders on Saturday."

Championnats de cross-country de SIC 2013: Guelph vise un huitième doublé consécutif
OTTAWA (SIC) – Les Gryphons de Guelph tenteront de poursuivre leur domination samedi lorsque les meilleurs coureurs universitaires se retrouveront à London, Ont., pour les championnats de cross-country de SIC 2013.
L'Université Western accueille la compétition pour une deuxième année de suite au Club de golf Thames Valley. Un total de 141 athlètes en provenance de 27 institutions participeront à la course féminine de six kilomètres (1 km de plus que par la passé) dont le départ est prévu pour midi, alors que 131 coureurs de 23 universités sont inscrits pour l'épreuve masculine de 10 kilomètres qui débutera à 13h.
Affirmer que Guelph a dominé le cross-country de SIC ces dernières années serait un euphémisme.
Les Gryphons ont balayé les bannières canadiennes par équipe lors de chacune des sept dernières saisons et ont remporté les huit derniers titres féminins, tous des records de SIC
Sur le plan individuel, leurs coureuses ont décroché les deux dernières médailles d'or, soit Andrea Seccafien l'an dernier et Geneviève Lalonde en 2011, alors que chez les hommes, Guelph avait remporté quatre titres consécutifs avant que Kelly Wiebe de Regina ne mette fin à cette séquence il y a 12 mois, alors que les Gryphons avaient dû se « contenter » de placer quatre de leurs athlètes parmi les sept premiers, incluant les médaillés d'argent et de bronze.
Les Gryphons sont les grands favoris pour décrocher les bannières par équipe encore une fois samedi suite à leur domination des championnats de la conférence SUO qui se sont déroulés le 26 octobre à Hamilton, là où Guelph a balayé les titres féminin et masculin pour une neuvième campagne d'affilée, plaçant cinq coureuses parmi les sept premières et monopolisant le podium chez les messieurs.
« Nous nous présentons à London avec les deux meilleures équipes dans l'histoire de notre programme, a dit le pilote de Guelph, Dave Scott Thomas. Tous nos athlètes sont fins prêts tant physiquement que mentalement. Notre objectif est simple : remporter de nouveau les deux bannières. »
Dans les autres conférences de SIC, Dalhousie (femmes) et StFX (hommes) ont été couronnés champions de SUA, alors que McGill (femmes) et Laval (hommes) défendaient avec succès leur titre du RSEQ.
Du côté individuel, Melissa Hardy de StFX et John Kuto de Saint Mary's ont remporté les médailles d'or dans l'Atlantique, alors que Sarah Bergeron-Larouche de l'UQTR et Charles Philibert-Thiboutot de Laval s'imposaient au Québec.
Il n'y a pas de championnats de cross-country au sein de Canada-Ouest. Les résultats à la rencontre de SIC déterminent les champions individuels et par équipe de la conférence. L'an dernier, les Vikes de Victoria avaient pris le quatrième rang au classement canadien tant chez les femmes que chez les hommes.
« Notre équipe a très bien fait jusqu'ici cet automne. Les athlètes ont pris les bouchées doubles à l'entraînement au cours de l'été et cela a fait une différence, a dit l'entraîneur-chef de StFX, Bernie Chisholm. Nous espérons améliorer notre performance de l'an dernier au championnat de SIC. Un top 10 est très réaliste. »
« Le fait que notre championnat de conférence et celui de SIC soient passés de cinq à six kilomètres est un élément clé pour nous, a dit le pilote de McGill,
Dennis Barrett. Nos filles ne sont pas nécessairement les plus rapides sur cinq kilomètres, mais le kilomètre supplémentaire leur permet de mettre à profit leur endurance. »
Laval a terminé deuxième chez les hommes l'an dernier aux championnats de SIC et l'entraîneur Félix-Antoine Lapointe est confiant de voir les siens connaître du succès encore une fois ce week-end.
« Notre équipe masculine a obtenu une excellente saison jusqu'à maintenant et l'objectif est de poursuivre sur cette lancée lors des championnats nationaux. Cette compétition a toujours été l'objectif ultime de la saison.
« Après une deuxième position par équipe en 2012, ce qui représentait le premier podium par équipe de l'histoire du club, l'édition 2013 est déterminée à monter sur le podium pour une deuxième année consécutive. Charles Philibert-Thiboutot, Benjamin Raymond et Emmanuel Boisvert sont nos leaders, eux qui ont balayé les médailles lors du championnat du RSEQ. Charles est invaincu cette année et il sera assurément un des athlètes à surveiller samedi. »
