GUELPH, Ont. –
Jeremy Briand a McGill University freshman, was named CIS rookie of the year and placed 23rd overall at the CIS cross-country running championships, at the Arboretum in Guelph, Saturday.
Briand, a 20-year-old science student majoring in physics, became the first distance runner from McGill to be crowned as the top rookie in cross-country running. The 5-foot-7, 135-pound native of Ste. Julie, Que., completed the 10-kilometre course in 31 minutes, 24.9 seconds.
He was followed by McGill teammates
Francois Jarry (40th, 31:45.3) of Lachine, Que.,
Santiago Bessai (51st, 31:58.4) of Toronto,
Benjamin Forestell (69th, 322:20.7) of Huntsville, Ont.,
Dan Kelly (94th, 32:57.0) of Calgary and
Vincent Parent-Pichette (106th, 33:25.0) of Verdun, Que.
McGill ended up 10th of the 20 teams entered in the men's division but had insufficient entries to score on the women's side, which was led by senior
Melanie Myrand of Lachine, Que., who produced McGill's top result, placing 16th overall. She completed the 6k race in 21:19.5, just missing All-Canadian status -- which goes to the top 14 runners -- by about three seconds.
The other McGill women included Montrealer
Jullien Flynn (27th, 21:35.8) and
Meggie Dargis (72nd, 22:52) of Trois-Rivieres, Que.
The Victoria Vikes captured their first men's banner since 1997, while Guelph claimed their 11
th straight women's crown.
Guelph's
Aaron Hendrikx grabbed the men's individual title for the second time in three years, clocking in at 30:18.1. Lakehead's
Kevin Tree was second in 30:24.1 and Windsor's
Paul Janikowski took bronze in 30:24.4.
Podium finishers for the women included Trinity Western's
Sarah Inglis, who struck gold with a course record time of 19:49.9. She was joined on the podium by Toronto's
Gabriela Stafford (20:09.7) and Windsor's
Stefanie Smith (20:25.4).
