Box Score
MONTREAL - Tyler Stothers of Oakville, Ont., scored twice as the visiting Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's hockey team upset No. 5 McGill 4-3 at McConnell Arena, Friday.

It was WLU's third straight win as well as their third cosecutive conquest over McGill dating back to the 2006 season. The teams are now knotted at 11-11-1 lifetime against each other since they first met in the 1960s.

It was the first meeting between the clubs since former Laurier bench boss Kelly Nobes left the Waterloo-based club  to take over as head coach at McGill in 2010.

McGill outshot Laurier 32-22 but the teams were tied at 2-2 after one period. The Hawks pulled ahead 4-2 after two and hung on for a dizzying third period which featured a 14-2 edge in shots for McGill.

Stothers scored his pair sandwiched around first-period McGill goals by Max Le Sieur of Montreal and Cedric McNicoll of Thelford Mines, Que. The Hawks regained their lead in the middle stanza when Zach Woolford of Rockwood, Ont., and Ryan Lopes of Brampton, Ont., struck for two goals in 34 seconds late in the period o make it 4-2.

Jonathan Brunelle of Broisbriand, Que., replied on the power-play for McGill midway through the final stanza but the Redmen could not solve goaltender Duncan Long of Brantford, Ont.,, who made 29 saves and collected only his second victory in five decisions.

Mathieu Pompei, a sophomore from Laval, Que., drew assists on both Redmen markers..

The Redmen dug themselves into a hole with penalties, taking the game's first five infractions and seven of the nine called. Laurier went 2-for-5 on the power-play while McGill was 1-for-2.

The Redmen dropped to 8-3-1 and tumbled to second place in the OUA East as surprising Queen's moved to the head of the class with a 7-0-5 record. McGill will host Waterloo (5-6-1) on Saturday and the game will be streamed live on SSN Canada at 7 p.m. Laurier (4-5-1) will head to the nation's capital the same day to take on the surging Gee-Gees (8-5-0).

REDMEN RAP:  Among the former Redmen spotted at the game was Pierre Gendron, Yves Beaucage, Mike Richards and Herb Madill... Also on hand was Dr, Wayne Halliwell, a sports psychologist with the Canadian Olympic team, whose brother Bert once skated for the Redmen.
