MONTREAL – Sophomore
Mariam Sylla registered a "double-double" as the visiting McGill Martlets remained undefeated with a 54-44 conquest over UQAM in women's basketball, Saturday.
It was the Martlets ninth consecutive win against RSEQ conference opponents, dating back to a 71-66 loss to Concordia on Feb. 1, 2013.
McGill, which had an incredible 53-28 edge in rebounding, overcame a nine-point deficit late in the second quarter. In a game that featured nine lead changes, UQAM led 12-10 after the opening quarter and 27-21 at the half before McGill took control, outscoring the Citadins 17-10 in the third and 16-7 in the final quarter.
Sylla, a 6-foot-1, all-conference power forward, scored 14 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. She shot 6-for-11 from the floor and went 2-for-2 from the foul line.
Veteran
Francoise Charest added 13 points, mostly a result of a 6-for-8 performance from the charity stripe. Teammate
Helene Bibeau scored nine points and ripped down a game-high 13 boards.
Jessica Lubin, who just joined the Citadins last week, paced her troops with a game-high 16 points and six rebounds.
The Martlets connected on 35.0 per cent of their attempts from the field, 20.0 from three-point range and 62.5 from the line, compared to UQAM, which shot 39.6, 14.3 and 41.7, respectively.
McGill, which improved to 2-0 atop the RSEQ standings, will host Concordia (1-1) on Thursday, Nov. 21, at 6 p.m. in Love Competition Hall.
The Citadins (2-1) are off until Nov. 27, when they travel to play at Laval (0-1).
