Victoria Muccilli earned the shutout while team captain
Meghan Bourque scored the game-winner and assisted on another as McGill blanked visiting Sherbrooke 3-0 in a key RSEQ women's soccer matchup on a rainy evening at Molson Stadium, Sunday.
The win avenged an early season 3-0 loss at Sherbrooke on Sept. 8 and catapulted McGill into third place with a 6-2-2 record, one point ahead of Sherbrooke, which dropped to 6-3-1.
"We've been improving consistently and I'm happy with the way we've progressed as a team," said McGill head coach
Jose-Luis Valdes. "After starting the season with losses to Montreal and Sherbrooke, it was very important that we bounce back to take points off both this weekend. And that's exactly what we did, with a tie against the Carabins on Friday and today's win."
Muccilli made three saves to improve her record to 4-1-2 and post her league-leading fourth whitewash in seven regular season starts. The 22-year-old history senior from Mississauga, Ont., also leads in goals-against average (0.31) and minutes played (578).
Bourque, a physiology senior from Burlington, Ont., tallied in just the eighth minute of play. It was her team-leading fourth goal in 10 games. Ten minutes later, she assisted on
Rebecca Green's insurance goal to put the Martlets ahead 2-0 heading into halftime.
Kelsey Wilson, a defender from Pincourt, Que., put the game out of reach in the 75th minute.
Sherbrooke 'keeper Elena Waldispuehl was beaten three times on four shots and took the loss.
The Martlets have four games remaining before playoffs. They get a rare one-week bye for the Thanksgiving break before resuming their schedule against sixth-place UQAM (2-7-1) on Oct. 17 at Molson Stadium, Kick-off is set for 6:30 p.m.
