QUEBEC CITY -- The McGill women's soccer team closed out their regular schedule with a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Laval at Sunday. The result clinched a fourth-place finish for the Martlets with an 8-3-3 record.
Goalkeeper
Sarah Dubois, a freshman from Edmonton, Alta., got the start over veteran
Victoria Muccilli, who was being rested. Dubois made four saves to earn her first career shutout.
Laval 'keeper Joelle Morasse also registered made four saves to garner a blank sheet.
The Rouge et Or had a 5-3 edge in corner kicks but McGill maintained ball possession for almost 48 minutes.
"We played a good road game today," said McGill head coach
Jose-Luis Valdes, whose rested a number of banged up starters as the team prepares for playoffs. "We took the opportunity to start a few players who have not played as much and they did very well against one of the league's strongest offences. We limited Laval to only one shot on goal in each half.
"In the second half, we made six substitutions and the players that came off the bench maintained our defensive stability and increased our attacking tempo. We dominated the second half but were not precise enough to put one away."
McGill will now have to make a 15-minute excursion to the other side of Mt. Royal, where they will do battle against the perennial division-leading Montreal Carabins (11-1-2) in a sudden-death semifinal matchup on Friday night, 6:30 p.m. at Stade CEPSUM. The women's semifinal will be followed by the men's semi at 8:30 p.m., also between McGill and Montreal.
Montreal defeated the Martlets 1-0 in the first meeting at Molson Stadium on Sept. 5 and the bitter rivals battled to a 0-0 draw at Stade CEPSUM on Oct. 4. The Carabins outscord opponents by a 37-10 margin in 14 games, while McGill had a 27-8 advantage, posting the best defensive record in the eight-team conference with a league-leading seven shutouts.
The league championship game is slated for Sunday at the winner of the Laval-Sherbrooke semifinal.
"Road games are always a challenge and playing a good game against a top team like Laval today after the longest drive of the season is important for our confidence," said Valdes. "We will have to play all of our playoff games on the road so this tie in Quebec City was reassuring."
