TROIS-RIVIERES -- Karianne Chayer scored twice as UQTR surprised visiting McGill 2-1 in RSEQ women's soccer action Sunday afternoon. Chayer gave her side a 2-0 lead with markers in the 37th and 66th minutes.
The result, against a sixth-place Patriotes team (3-8-1) who will miss the playoffs, snapped McGill's nine-game undefeated streak as the third-place Martlets dropped to a 7-3-2 record. It won't cost a post-season playoff berth for the Martlets, but it put a serious dent in their chances of a top-two finish in the eight-team RSEQ conference. The chances of hosting a playoff game are now remote.
The lone McGill goal scorer was
Margaux Sleckman, a native of San Francisco, who spoiled goalkeeper
Gabrielle Lambert's shutout bid in the 81st minute. Lambert made five saves in the contest and was credited with the victory while McGill 'keeper
Victoria Muccilli of Mississauga, was beaten twice on five shots and saddled with her first loss of the season.
"We played a very good defensive team," said McGill head coach
Jose-Luis Valdes. "They got a couple of lucky bounces and before we knew it we were down by two. We played a good game and created several chances, including a shot off the crossbar which would have made it 2-2. We will have to work on a few details in practice over the next few days."
McGill will close out the campaign by hosting last-place Bishop's on Oct. 25 (2-10-0) and traveling to third-place Laval (8-3-1) on Oct. 27.
