TROIS-RIVIERES -
Max Leblond posted a shutout and four different players scored as the McGIll University men's soccer team pulled off a huge 4-0 road victory at UQTR in a must-win affair, Sunday.
It was one of the team's most crucial regular season results in recent memory as the Redmen not only staved off elimination but are now in the driver's seat for a playoff berth, leap-frogging over the Patriotes in the RSEQ conference standings. McGill, which improved to 3-4-4, now sits in the fourth and final playoff spot, two points ahead of the Pats (3-6-2). Each team has one game remaining on their schedule.
"We knew that losing here today would mean that our season was over and we came up with our best game to date, in terms of an organized system and quality of play," said Redmen head coach
Marc Mounicot. "It was a positive end to the weekend and a big confidence booster. We now have our destiny in our hands."
Leblond, a political science sophomore from Lille, France, stopped four shots for the victory.
Valentin Radevich, a native of Belarus, scored the game-winner.
Alexandre De Santis of St. Mathias-sur-Richelieu, Que., added an insurance marker.
Mawuena Mallett of Vancouver, B.C., who made it 3-0,, also added an assistant and was named as McGill's player of the game. Rounding out the scoring was newcomer Mohammed Kleit, a freshman midfielder from Montreal. who was added to the team roster last week.
UQTR and McGill both face tough matchups in their final regular season game. McGill travels to third-place Laval (5-1-4) on Oct. 27. A win or tie will clinch a post-season spot for the Redmen. McGill can also make the playoffs regardless of the outcome if UQTR loses their final contest, in Montreal against the Carabins (6-2-2), who are tied atop the standings with upstart UQAM on Oct. 25. In order to snatch the fourth and final playoff spot ahead of McGill, the Pats must win while hoping for a McGill loss.
