MONTREAL -- The McGill University men's soccer team battled second-place UQAM to a scoreless draw at Molson Stadium, Thursday. The result kept McGill's precarious playoff hopes alive as the fifth-place Redmen improved to 2-4-4. They sit perched one point in arrears of UQTR (3-4-2), which sits in the final playoff berth with a game in hand.
McGill has only two games remaining and both are on the road, beginning with a must-win matchup at UQTR (3-4-2) on Oct. 20 at 1 p.m. and followed by a tough game at third-place Laval (4-1-3) on Oct. 27.
UQAM, which improved to 5-2-2, sit three points behind division-leading Montreal. The Citadins will host cellar-dwelling Concordia (2-6-0) on Sunday evening.
REDMEN RAP: Among the faces in the crowd was McGill's 1982 Redmen soccer team that gathered from all corners of the planet to be inducted in the McGill Sports Hall of Fame on Thursday. That team posted a stellar 15-1-3 overall record en route to capturing both the Quebec league title and the national championship. They will be celebrating the 31st anniversary of their CIAU banner next month. That squad was guided by head coach
Gord Gow of Beaconsfield, Que., along with assistant coaches
Zach Breganski and
Rob Tipney. Their lineup featured four conference all-stars –
Mike Kondro,
John D'Ambrosio, team captain
Guy-Marie Joseph and
Dr. Dickens St-Vil – the latter three who each earned all-Canadian status. Rounding out the roster was alternate captain
Doug Cave, Alistair MacDonald,
John Gummersell,
Tony Iachetta,
Marc Noë,
John Kwamya,
John Oestreich,
Hisham Abdel-Rehman,
Aldo Braccio,
Steve Johnstone,
Chris Barrow,
Scott Green and
Graham Butcher.
