TORONTO --
Max Le Sieur scored twice and goaltender
Andrew Flemming of Quispamsis, N.B., made 37 saves as visiting McGill blanked Toronto 3-0 in OUA men's hockey, Saturday.
It marked McGill's first shutout over the Varsity Blues since a 5-0 decision on Nov. 8, 2009 at McConnell Arena and their first in seven years at Varsity Arena, dating back to a 3-0 win on Oct. 27, 2006. This was the 221st meeting between these long-time rivals in a series that began on Feb. 20, 1899. McGill is now 85-121-15 lifetime against the Blues, including a 27-10-4 mark in the last 41 confrontations.
Flemming, a master's student in kinesiology who transferred to McGill last year after three seasons with RMC, collected just his second career goose-egg in 84 CIS regular season contests.
"He was real solid for us tonight," said McGill head coach
Kelly Nobes. "He came up with some big saves and had great rebound control."
The Varsity Blues, who dropped to 1-1, had a 37-29 edge in shots but couldn't solve Flemming, who set the tone in the first period after thwarting three great scoring chances.
The Blues nearly opened the scoring midway through the first when Flemming robbed Blake Boddy who deflected a cross-ice pass on goal.
LeSieur, a sophomore from Montreal, scored what proved to be the game-winner at 16:19 of the first period. He pounced on a loose rebound in the crease after a point shot from
Neil Blunden.
That goal stood up until late in the final stanza when
Ryan McKiernan, a finance senior from White Plains, N.Y., connected on a rocket from the blue line at 16:41. The goal was the culmination of a tic-tac-toe play, initiated from a faceoff won by former AHL player
Cedric McNicoll, back to defenceman
Jean-Philippe Mathieu, who fed McKiernan on a one-timer.
U of T had numerous chances to tie the game in the third, the best coming when Tyler Turcotte blasted a shot from the point with Brown on the doorstep, but the puck was swallowed up by Flemming without a rebound opportunity.
Le Sieur added an empty-netter at 18:56, converting a pretty three-way passing play from
Patrick Delisle-Houde and
Guillaume Langelier-Parent.
Blues goalie Garrett Sheehan, a senior from Cremona, Alta., made 26 saves in a losing cause.
The game featured a plethora of after-the-whistle scuffles and the two teams combined for 68 penalty minutes on 22 infractions. Both teams went scoreless on the power-play, with McGill going 0-for-2 and Toronto coming up empty in three chances.
The Blues next game is Oct. 16 at home against upstart Ryerson (2-0), which defeated McGill 3-2 in overtime on Friday night.
The Redmen (1-0-1) will host Ottawa (0-2) and UQTR (0-2) during McGill Homecoming Week. The Gee-Gees, led by former McGill defenceman and assistant coach Real Paiement, will visit on Oct. 18, followed by the Patriotes on Oct. 19. Puck drop for both contests is 7 p.m.
REDMEN RAP: Newly-appointed Redmen team captain
Benoit Levesque will be in studio for a live television interview on City's new "Breakfast TV" morning show on Tuesday Oct. 15 at 8:50 a.m. He will be discussing McGill's participation in their third annual "Score with School" program, which promotes the importance of staying in school and participating in sports. This year's event will feature Concordia at McGill in a regular season morning game at 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 26. The game will be a sellout as the English School Board of Montreal has agreed to purchase about 900 tickets for their students to attend the event at the 950-seat McConnell arena. The matinee was originally pencilled in against Guelph on Nov. 8 but negotions stalled and it will now be a showdown between the cross-town rivals. In order to accomodate the change, McGill's lone home game against Concordia has been rescheduled from Oct. 26 to Nov. 26.
