The Redmen had taken a 3-1 lead on a first-period goal by Marc-Olivier Vachon of Thetford Mines, Que., combined with a pair of power-play goals in second-period by rookie Jonathan Brunelle of Boisbriand, Que., and Justin Ducharme of Quebec City.

The Gee-Gees, who have won both meetings with McGill and improved their lifetime record against the Redmen to 79-95-10 overall, rallied with a pair of power-play goals when Mathieu Ouellette of Clarence Creek, Ont., struck at 10:12 of the middle stanza and Dominic Jalbert of Hull, Que., tied the score at 3-3 while McGill was two men short at 1:57 of the final frame. Defenceman Mathieu Leduc of Valleyfield, Que., tallied the other Gee-Gees goal, which knotted the score at 1-1 at 7:22 of the first period.

Ottawa had a 36-26 edge in shots as rookie netminder Francois Lacerte of Trois-Rivieres, Que., was credited with 22 saves in his first appearance with the Gee-Gees after joining them at the holiday break. Redmen 'keeper Andrew Flemming, a native of Quispamsis, N.B., made 32 saves in a losing cause and his record evened out at 5-5-0.

"Our power-play was effective today, which is a positive to draw from, but our penalty-kill has got to be better," said Redmen bench boss Kelly Nobes, whose troops went 2-for-5 with the man-advantage but allowed Ottawa to score twice on six PP opportunities. "We had some other good scoring chances to win, with Ryan McKiernan hitting a goal post and Benoit Levesque getting chance all alone in front, off a great forecheck but at the end of the day, we had too many lost battles for the puck."

McGill, which dropped to 10-6-1, now trails the fourth-place Gee-Gees (9-5-4) by one point in the OUA East with a game in hand. The Redmen will host Concordia (5-10-2) on Jan. 9, while Ottawa travels to division-leading UQTR (12-3-1) on Jan. 11.

REDMEN RAP: The is some help on the horizon for the injury-riddled Redmen, who had five regulars out for the second straight contest... Rookie forward Mathieu Pompei, who ranks second on the team in goals and third in points with a 7-6-13 record in 13 games, is expected back next week from a leg injury... Other probable returnees in the not-too-distant future are defencemen Guillaume Monast (upper body) and Jean-Philippe Mathieu, who has missed 17 league games with a broken leg.
