Ravens roar back, really unravel Redmen in final period

Benoit Levesque
Box Score
MONTREAL – Centre Jeff Hayes of Ottawa scored a hat-trick to ignite a third-period comeback as the No.10-ranked Carleton Ravens rallied for a 5-2 victory over McGill in OUA men's hockey at McConnell Arena, Friday.

The result avenged Carleton's 6-4 loss to the Redmen on Oct. 13 and snapped McGill's four-game win streak in regular season play. More importantly, the second-place Ravens improved to 11-4-2 and moved four points ahead of fourth-place McGill, which dropped to 10-6-0.

Ahead 1-0 on a second-period marker by McGill sophomore Marc-Olivier Vachon of Thetford Mines, Que., the Redmen completely unraveled in the final frame, when Carleton scored five times in a 13-minute span.

Hayes tallied at 29 seconds, then added a shorthanded marker to make it 2-0 at 6:13. It appeared that the bleeding was over when Nicolas Biniek replied for McGill on the same power-play at 6:33.

But the Ravens exploded for three goals in a 104-second span, with Michael Lomas scoring at 11:53, followed by Andrew Glass at 12:40 and Hayes, who completed his hat-trick at 13:37.

The Ravens had a lopsided 45-18 advantage in shots, including an astounding 25-6 margin in the middle frame. But Redmen netminder Hubert Morin of St. Georges de Beauce, Que., was unbeatable over the first two periods, when he registered 29 of his 40 saves. His record dropped to 5-2 while Carleton senior Ryan Dube of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., made 16 saves and improved to 9-2.

McGill will have a day to regroup before heading to the nation's capital on Sunday for a 2 p.m. matinee against fifth-place Ottawa. The Gee-Gees are 8-4-0 heading into a Saturday afternoon game (2 p.m.) at Concordia (4-10-2).

“We're young, under-sized and got beat by a better team,” said Redmen head coach Kelly Nobes, whose roster features 10 first-year players and only five who tip the scales at 200 pounds or more (three of them injured). By comparison, Carleton has 15 players listed at 200 pounds or more. “We've had a lot of bad luck with injuries this year and it has been a factor.”

Injured Redmen co-captains Patrick Belzile and Marc-Andre Daneau continue to rack-up the man-games lost. Belzile, a senior forward from St. Eloi, Que., has only dressed for seven of McGill's 24 games and has been out of the line-up since suffering an upper-body injury against Ottawa on Oct. 12.

Daneau, a fifth-year senior forward from Daveluyville, Que., is out for the season after recently undergoing knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus and a torn ligament in his left knee. He previously had surgery on his right knee last summer and was only able to dress for six games before being injured against Toronto on Nov. 23.

Other lineup scratches against Carleton included centre Mathieu Pompei (leg injury suffered at Lakehead, Dec. 28) along with defenceman Guillaume Monast (upper-body injury against RMC on Dec. 1) and Jean-Philippe Mathieu (broken leg against Carleton, Oct. 13).

REDMEN RAP: McGill's lifetime record against Carleton dropped to 21-16-1 lifetime... The 25 shots allowed in the second period was the most shots against the Redmen since UNB had 29 in the middle frame of a non-conference contest on Oct. 20, 1979.
