OTTAWA – Jeff Hayes of Ottawa scored twice and added a pair of helpers as No.8-ranked Carleton escaped with a 4-3 win over McGill in a spirited, penalty-filled OUA men's hockey game at the CU Ice House, Sunday.

The result solidified Carleton's hold on second place in the OUA East standings as the Ravens improved to 17-6-2 – one point behind division-leading UQTR (18-5-1) and five points ahead of McGill (17-6-2) with only two weeks remaining before playoffs.
McGill spotted Carleton a 4-0 lead by the midway mark of the second period – two by Hayes, with singles from Joey West of Orleans, Ont., and Mitch Porowski of Ottawa – then stormed back with a pair of power-play goals from rookie rearguard
Jean-Philippe Mathieu of Loretteville, Que., sandwiched around a goal by
Guillaume Langelier-Parent of Léry, Que., to make it 4-3 before the nine-minute mark of the final frame.
McGill outshot the Ravens 16-7 in the third period and appeared to have Carleton on the ropes but ran out of time.
The game also featured 79 minutes in penalties, including 48 to Redmen.
Carleton's Tyler Taylor and Redmen junior
Neil Blunden of Montreal got tangled up in a second-period skirmish that by the time the dust had cleared, resulted in some 47 penalty minutes. Blunden received an extra minor for instigating and an extra major for slashing, which left the Redmen shorthanded for the next seven minutes. Combined with an earlier minor, he collected a total of 34 PIMs, the most in a game by a McGill player since Sept. 27, 1981, when Mike Nelson set a school record with 52.
Carleton finished the game with a 41-32 margin in shots as goaltender Ryan Dube of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., improved to 12-4 on the season. Morin, a fifth-year senior from St. Georges de Beauce, Que., turned aside 37 saves in a losing cause and dropped to 8-3.
More important than losing the game, however, was the hard-luck loss of J.P. Mathieu, arguably the team's most productive blueliner. The 5-foot-10, 171-pound product of the QMJHL's Rimouski Oceanic, re-injured his right leg after being checked along the boards by Shane Bakker and could be out for the remainder of the season if x-rays confirm a fracture.
Mathieu previously broke the same limb against Carleton on Oct. 13, 2012. He missed 17 games, including four non-conference contests before returning to the lineup against Concordia on Jan. 9. Since returning, he has scored eight points, including three power-play goals, in seven games. During that stretch, the Redmen power-play has thrived, connecting on 11 of 38 opportunities for a success rate of 28.9 per cent.
McGill is now 22-17-1 lifetime against the Ravens. Carleton's victory meant that the rivals split their four-game season series, with each team collecting wins at home and on the road.
The Redmen sit third in the OUA East and have four games remaining before post-season play. They will hit the road next weekend for games against the fifth-place Toronto Varsity Blues (12-8-4) on Feb. 1 (7:30 pm) and the fourth-place Nipissing (13-9-2) in North Bay, Ont., on Feb. 2 (7 pm).
