MONTREAL -- Mariam Sylla, a rookie from Guinea, registered her third “double-double” of the month as unranked McGill used a fourth-quarter blitz to unseat the No.9-ranked Concordia Stingers 55-46 in Quebec university women's basketball action at the Concordia Beehive, Thursday.

The victory moved the Martlets (7-2) ahead of Concordia (6-3) in the RSEQ standings and into a tie with UQAM (7-3) for first place.

McGill, which was missing the services of leading scorer Anneth Him-Lazarenko (concussion), outscored the Stingers 22-9 in the final stanza to collect their second consecutive victory over their cross-town rivals. In their last rendezvous on Jan. 10, the Martlets outscored Concordia 22-4 in the third quarter en route to a humbling 75-44 conquest.

“One of the things we focused on at halftime was making a few adjustments in our defensive system,” said Ryan Thorne, in his 10th season as head coach at McGill. “And it just changed the direction of the game for us.”

Sylla, a 6-foot-1 centre, tallied 20 points on 8-for-16 shooting from the field and a 4-for-6 effort from the free-throw line. She pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds. Her efforts overshadowed a 23-point performance by Concordia's Kaylah Barrett.

“Mariam has improved every game and is really beginning to understand her role and where she can be successful,” said Thorne of his prized recruit who starred for College Montmorency. “She was a star in the CEGEP league and needed to learn to pick her spots at this level. She has done a much better job of that of the last two weeks.”

In the four games since posting six points against Concordia on Jan. 10, the 20-year-old pharmacology freshman has reached double figures four times in scoring and three times in rebounding.

Marie-Pier Bastrash of Trois-Rivières, Que., came off the bench to contribute 10 points for the winning side, to go along with six rebounds and a steal. Teammate Helene Bibeau of St. Bruno, Que., also subbed in and added seven points with eight rebounds.

The Martlets led 20-13 after the first quarter but stumbled in the second stanza and were outscored 16-6 as Concordia pulled ahead 29-26 heading into intermission. Thorne rallied his troops to take a 38-37 advantage after the third and McGill outscored Concordia by 13 points in the last quarter.

McGill thoroughly dominated under the glass and registered a 49-34 margin in rebounds. They made 42 per cent of their field-goal attempts (21/50), went 3-for-13 from three-point range and clicked on 15 of 18 attempts from the foul-line. The Stingers shot a horrific 23.6 per cent from the field (17 of 72), went 4-for-35 from the arc and 8-for-9 from the line.

McGill has now won two of three meetings with their bitter rivals and the teams will cross paths one more time before playoffs when they hook up at Love Competition Hall on Feb. 1 in an event that will serve as both, the "Pack The House" soiree, as well as the annual "Shoot for the Cure" fundraiser for breast cancer.

Before that, however, the Martlets play at Bishop's (0-9) on Jan. 30.
