It was McGill's fourth straight victory – their first win in three tries against the Gee-Gees this season – and improved the defending national champions' record to 14-6-1. The Redmen remain third in the OUA East, three points behind division-leading Carleton (15-5-2) and just one back of UQTR (15-5-1).

Ottawa took the lead on three occasions and McGill knotted the score each time, en route to their three-goal explosion which finally halted the Gee-Gees in their tracks.

“It was a character-win for us tonight,” said Redmen bench boss Kelly Nobes. “We played perhaps our best third-period of the season and found a way to get it done, even with a depleted lineup.”

Trailing 3-2 in the final stanza, McGill tied the score when rookie Trevor Braun of Windham, Maine, connected at 1:48, just 37 seconds after Gee-Gees captain Luc-Olivier Blain had given his side the lead with his second marker of the game.

Pompei, an elementary education freshman, gave McGill their first lead at 12:53 of the third, with his second of the soiree and team-leading ninth of the campaign on the power-play.

Hugo Laporte, a defenceman from Ste. Julie, Que., who had been moved up front a number of times during the game in the absence of five injured McGill forwards, was credited with the insurance marker on the power-play with 1:37 remaining, when a shot by teammate David Rose ricocheted off his leg.

Ottawa had opened the scoring in the first period on Stephen Blunden's goal at 1:16 but McGill rearguard Ryan McKiernan of White Plains, N.Y., evened the count 79 seconds later on his seventh of the season, which ties him for the lead among OUA blueliners.

Blaine put the Gee-Gees ahead 2-1 in the middle frame with his first of two but Pompei evened the score again, setting the stage for the third-period comeback.

Ottawa, which had a 25-24 edge in shots, went 1-for-4 on the power-play, while the Redmen connected on 2-of-8 opportunities.

McGill goaltender Andrew Flemming, starting for the first time in four games, made 22 saves and improved his record to 6-5. Rookie Francois Lacerte of Trois-Rivières, Que., who joined the Gee-Gees lineup after the holidays, took the loss and dropped to 1-2.

The Redmen can move into second place with a victory at UQTR (15-5-1) on Jan. 22. They will return to the friendly confines of McConnell Arena on Jan. 25 when they host Concordia (5-13-3).

The fifth-place Gee-Gees (10-7-4) play at Ryerson (7-13-0) on Jan. 20.

REDMEN RAP: McGill improved to 96-79-10 in 185 lifetime meetings with Ottawa… In addition to Laporte playing a number of shifts at forward, two other defencemen filled in for the plethora of missing bodies up front, with rookie Vincent Barnard and junior Neil Blunden holding their own… The five injured forwards, who are not expected back for a while, include Justin Ducharme (lower body), Jonathan Brunelle (upper body) and Chris Longpre-Poirier (mid-torso) along with co-captains Patrick Belzile (upper body) and Marc-Andre Daneau (knee surgery).
