Lost 0-1 vs Laval

MONTREAL - A goal by Laval's Lea Chastenay-Joseph of Donnacona, Que., in the 32nd minute of play held up as the game-winner giving the visiting Rouge et Or a 1-0 upset over No.3-ranked McGill in women's soccer in rainy conditions at Molson Stadium, Sunday.

It snapped McGill's 13-game undefeated streak (11-0-2 overall) and dropped the Martlets to 6-1 in RSEQ conference play.

"Our streak had to end at some point," said a somewhat philosophical Marc Mounicot, head coach of the Martlets. "We lost against a talented side, they played very physical in the first 45 minutes and we lost two starters in the first half to injury, which didn't help our situation."

Defender Zoe Fasoulakis of Vancouver, B.C., was shaken up before the game was 11 minutes old and forward Daphnee Morency-Roussin, an American import from Boulder, Co., went down in the 25th minute.

"We were disorganized after losing Fasoulakis and we could not control the two Laval strikers (Chastenay-Joseph and Kathleen Berube-Garneau). We made an adjustment but it was a bit too late on my part as we eventually moved (midfielder) Julia Conzon (to defender) and she played very well at an unfamiliar position."

She bolstered a veteran backline of Bahar Sansar, Beth Armstrong and Kelsey Wilson, all of whom had a very strong outing.

McGill had a huge territorial advantage with a 14-7 margin in shots toward and a lopsided 9-2 edge in corner kicks however they could solve Laval goalkeeper Joelle Morasse, a 5-foot-4 freshman from Quebec City, who turned aside all five shots faced to preserve the shutout.

Aidan Mahoney, a rookie 'keeper from Ottawa, made her second straight start in place of injured veteran Victoria Muccilli. She registered three savesd and took the loss.

"We played on our heels most of the first half but the second half was totally different," said Mounicot. "We altered our formation and brought in more forwards with an attacking set-up.  Laval showed that they are a good side because we pushed really hard and dominated the second half but they defended well and their 'keeper was on top of her game. We had many corner kicks and a number of good chances but couldn't the ball past Morasse."

Laval, which improved to 4-3-1, looked significantly better than the previous meeting, a 3-1 win for McGill in Quebec City on Sept. 9.

"It is better to lose that game and end the streak now than during the playoffs," noted Mounicot. "Considering that we had to play six freshmen in the second half of the game, I liked the character that we showed. We just have to learn from that loss and rebound in our next game."

The Martlets (6-1) sit second in the eight-team Quebec league, three points behind division-leading Montreal (7-1) and seven contests remaining before playoffs.

McGill is now scheduled for a home-and-home series against their cross-town rivals, with a game at Concordia (3-2-2) on Wednesday (8:15 p.m.) and a return engagement at Molson Stadium on Oct. 11.
