Won 1-0 vs Sherbrooke

MONTREAL - Daphnée Morency-Roussin, a freshman from Boulder, Colorado, scored the game-winner from the box in the 37th minute of play as the No.3-ranked McGill University Martlets blanked third-place Sherbrooke 1-0 in women's soccer at Molson Stadium, Friday.

The win extended McGill's undefeated streak to 11-0-2 on the season overall, including an unblemished 6-0 mark in the RSEQ conference. It also avenged last year's semifinal loss to Sherbrooke and snapped a three-game losing skid to the Vert & Or.

"We may not have had our best performance offensively, especially in the first 45 minutes of play but our defensive work-ethic was very sharp and neutralized Sherbrooke," said Marc Mounicot, head coach of the Martlets. "They have a good team with a lot of technical skills and speed up front but were unable to generate any offensive threats against our defenders."

The Martlets had a 9-6 margin in shots toward the net and a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

"Our second half was much better, with more fluidity in our plays and more sharpness in ball movement and combination plays," added Mounicot. "I'm pleased with how things are going right now. Our team is cohesive, confident and playing solid soccer right now but we are young and still in a learning curve."

Goalkeeper Aidan Mahoney, a 5-foot-11 freshman from Ottawa, making her second straight regular season start, registered three saves to post her first official shutout. Mahoney, who also has two shared shutouts in her young career, was filling in for injured veteran Victoria Muccilli.

Swiss-native Elena Waldispuehl kicked aside five of six shots in a losing cause for the Vert & Or.

McGill, which trails first-place Montreal (7-1) by three points in the RSEQ standings, will look to extend their undefeated streak to 14 games when they host Laval (3-3-1) on Sunday at 5 p.m.  Sherbrooke (5-2-0) will host UQAM (1-5-1) on Sunday at 3 p.m.
