Redmen Soccer vs Sherbrooke (Home)

MONTREAL - Team captain Jeremy Hurdle tallied twice, including the game-winner as the McGill Redmen soccer team doubled visiting Sherbrooke 4-2 in a high-scoring men's university soccer game at Molson Stadium, Friday.

It was the McGill's highest offensive output in league play since a 4-0 win in the 2010 season opener, also against the Vert & Or.

Sherbrooke, which entered the game atop the RSEQ standings with a 3-1-1 record, managed a 9-7 edge in shots toward the net but McGill had a 5-3 margin in shots on target and catapulted into a mind-blowing 4-0 lead before the Vert & Or struck twice in the final four minutes to save face.

"We were overdue to get some goals," said first-year head coach Jose Valdes. "We've been playing well in most of our games but haven't been able to penetrate the defensive zone with much success. That finally changed tonight and we showed that we can play with a quality team like Sherbrooke."

Hurdle, a fifth-year geography major from Ambler, Penn., gave McGill a 1-0 lead in the dying seconds of the opening half and made it 3-0 in the 63rd minute. Other McGill marksmen included rookie Henri Ashe-Taylor (56th minute) of London, England, and senior Winston Pool, a native of Tokyo, who put the Redmen ahead 4-0 in the 83rd minute.

"Jeremy had a big game but he our leader and we expect him to bring consistency, game in, game out," added Valdes, a former Redmen goalkeeper who also served as a goalie coach with the Martlets. "When it comes time to pick up the troops, he always seems to find a way and when he gets a scoring chance, he usually finishes."

Moulay-Badre Aber, a second-year midfielder from Laval, Que., spoiled Max Leblond's bid for a shutout with goals in the 86th and 88th minutes. Leblond was credited with one save for the victory while Sherbrooke 'keeper Shawn Galego Do Couto, who made four saves and took the loss.

McGill, which sits fourth in the seven-team RSEQ conference with a 2-2-2 record, will host division-leading Laval (4-1-0) on Sunday at 3 p.m.  Sherbrooke (3-2-1) will host UQAM (2-2-2) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
