McGill defeats Bishops 8-0

Martlet Soccer vs Bishops (Away)

Won 8-0 at Bishop's

  • Coulter Field (Lennoxville, Qc)

LENNOXVILLE, Que. - Melissa St-Onge, a freshman from St, Lazar, Que., scored twice and added a helper as the No.5-ranked McGill women's soccer squad skunked Bishop's 8-0 at Coulter Field, Sunday.

It was the most goals scored by the Martlets since a 9-0 rampage over visiting Bishop's on Oct. 13, 2011.

McGill had an incredible 40-0 edge in crosses and outshot the winless Gaiters (0-4-2) by a lopsided 25-2 margin as beleaguered Bishop's goalie Molly Bucholtz was saddled with the loss despite a 17-save performance.

Aidan Mahoney of Ottawa and Meaghan Rye of Coquitlam, B.C., both of them freshmen, each made one save to share the shutout for McGill.

Hannah Rivkin of St. John's, Nfld., and Selena Colarossi of Burlington, Ont., also added a pair of goals. Rivkin, who was credited with the game-winner in the 15th minute of play and added the insurance marker two minutes later on a penalty-kick, is now tied for second among scoring leaders in the RSEQ conference with five markers in five games.

Rounding out the scoring, with their first career goals in CIS play, was Sarah Bourque, also from Burlington, and Kristina Pearkes of Vancouver, B.C.

"We approached the game with the right attitude and mindset," said McGill head coach Marc Mounicot. "It's easy to lose your focus when facing a weaker team after our hard-fought win over the Montreal Carabins the other night but we moved the ball nicely all over the pitch and scored some quality goals. We kind of needed a game like that as some of our veterans were a little banged up after beating the Carabins and we gave them the day off."

Starters who were kept out included goaltender Victoria Muccilli, defenders Julia Bahen and Beth Armstrong, as well as midfielder Hannah Kirby. Other vets like Rivkin, Bourque and Bahar Sansar were subbed out at halftime.

It gave an opportunity for Mounicot to give much-needed playing time for Pearkes, Colarossi, Margaux SleckmanSarah Bourque and Kelsey Wilson, a third-year defender who is slowly working her way back after suffering a torn ACL in her knee last year.

Next weekend will pose a stiff test for the Martlets who sit atop the 8-team RSEQ standings with a 5-0 record and have outscored opponents 19-2. They will host third-place Sherbrooke (5-1) on Friday (6:30 p.m.) and fourth-place Laval (3-3) on Sunday at 5 pm on SSN. McGill has a score to settle with Sherbrooke who swept all three meetings last year, including a 3-0 shocker in the conference semifinal.

"We need to avenge that and make sure that they know our team is more complete, deep and competitive this year," said Mounicot.
