McGill defeats UQTR 3-0

Sep. 16, 2012 - 3:00 PM

Martlet Soccer vs UQTR (Away)

Won 3-0 at UQTR

  • CAPS (Trois Rivieres, Quebec)

TROIS-RIVIERES -Three different players scored as the No.5-ranked McGill Martlets extended their undefeated streak to 7-0-2 with a 3-0 road victory over UQTR, Sunday.

Bahar Sansar scored what proved to be the winning goal with just two minutes remaining before halftime. She fired a well-struck shot into the top corner to mark her first official goal in CIS league play.

Melissa St-Onge added an insurance marker in the 61st minute when she converted a pass from Hannah Rivkin just inside the post for her first CIS marker as well. Fifteen minutes later, Rivkin put the game out of reach, firing from the edge of the box with a nice shot just under the crossbar.

"It is a good result for us," said McGill head coach Marc Mounicot. "Last year we had a bad performance on this field and I think we proved that we were a stronger team today. UQTR was sometimes dangerous on the counter attack but we were physically the stronger team over the last 20 minutes."

The first half was dominated by the Martlets but they were not sharp in the last 15 minutes and seemed unwilling to take shots from the edge of the box. McGill 'keeper Victoria Muccilli was called upon to make a big save on a counter but other than that chance, McGill retained possession for the bulk of the half.

The second half was a different story, with McGill moving the ball faster and having more presence upfront with St-Onge and Sarah Bourque bringing speed and solid play-making ability.

"It was a very physical half but Rivkin, Meghan Bourque and Kristina Pearkeswere strong in the midfield," noted Mounicot. "St-Onge also brought a physical presence upfront and was strong at holding the ball on top."

Once the game was out of reach, Mounicot decided to give backup 'keeper Aidan Mahoney some playing time. As a result, Muccilli lost her bid for the shutout as a shared whitewash is credited to the team, but she was credited with the victory.

The Martlets improved to 3-0 in the RSEQ conference and now face a showdown with their heated rivals from across the mountain. The undefeated and No.1-ranked Montreal Carabins will be the visitors on Thursday and a large crowd is expected for what is being billed as "Pack the Field Night". Kick-off is set for 6:30 pm at Molson Stadium.

"We know what to expect from them," said Mounicot. "They are a well-disciplined side that works hard and will want to remain undefeated. We are in the same situation and will have to take care of some details but I know that we can give them a good challenge."
