Varsity leaves soccer Redmen feeling blue in PK shootout

Aug. 25, 2012 - 7:15 PM

Redmen Soccer at Toronto (Old Four Tournament; Away)

Lost 1-2 at Toronto (PK: 3-4) (EXHIBITION)

TORONTO - Killan Elkinson connected on the decisive penalty-kick as the University of Toronto outlasted McGill 4-3 in a shootout for a 2-1 victory in men's soccer at the Old Four tournament, Saturday.

The two teams traded late goals in regulation, forcing the wild shootout session. U of T's Mario Kovacevic broke the ice in the 73rd minute of play, beating McGill freshman Max Leblond, a 5-foot-10 native of Lille, France.

But three minutes later, Jeremy Hurdle a fifth-year senior from Ambler, Penn., knotted the score at 1-1 when his shot got past U of T goalie Rab Bruce-Lockhart.

In penalties, veteran Alexis Pradié, a native of France scored for the Redmen, along with rookies Henri Ashe-Taylor from the UK and Constantine Valettas of Ottawa.

Hurdle, who shot second, fired too high on his opportunity and missed the net. The teams were even at 3-3, heading into Elkinson's decisive tally. Varsity Blues 'keeper turned back McGill's fifth shot, taken by junior Jamie Allester.

"I'm not pleased about losing but overall, I was very happy with the way we played," said new McGill head coach Jose Valdes, a former Redmen goalkeeper who also coached with the McGill women's team for a number of years. "Possession-wise, I think we controlled most of the game. Our play was much better organized today than it was in our first exhibition game (a surprising 3-2 loss to Dawson College on Aug. 20). We recovered the ball better and held on to it much longer. That was one of our objectives heading into this weekend."

The Redmen, who dropped to 0-2-0 in preseason play, will take on Queen's in Sunday morning's consolation game at 12:15 p.m.

Western came away with a dominant 5-0 victory over Queen's in the first men's match of the day. Fillipo Luliani, Pat Mroczek, Rudy James, Luke Todd and Brendan Catliff all tallied for the Mustangs.  Ivan Skoko notched the shutout win.
