MONTREAL - Defenceman Keven Dupont scored the only goal in a post-overtime shootout to give the McGill men's hockey team a 3-2 victory over the No.10-ranked Toronto Varsity Blues before 658 fans in the first annual Centraide game for charity at McConnell Arena, Friday.
Dupont, a 5-foot-11, 195-pound native of St. Charles de Bellechasse, Que., skated in, faked a slapshot, then deked Toronto netminder Garrett Sheehan for the only shootout marker. The kinesiology junior has four goals in 71 career contests overall for the Redmen.
McGill, which had a 31-28 edge in shots, went 2-for-6 on the power-play against the Blues, who entered the game as the top PK unit (89.6%) in the 19-team league. The Redmen also killed off seven of eight shorthanded situations.
"We were certainly happy with our results on the PP tonight," said Redmen head coach Kelly Nobes. "We moved it around well, shot pucks when we needed to and fortunately we got a couple of goals there. Our penalty-kill was real solid as well but for me the difference was that we played 60 minutes of relentless hockey which had been lacking for the last couple of weeks. We've talked about it a lot lately and it showed tonight with pretty much all 20 guys playing with the type of effort required to win. "
Redmen rearguard Ryan McKiernan of White Plains, N.Y., registered a pair of points, including his third goal of the season, scored on the power-play only 103 seconds after the opening faceoff.
Paul Van De Velde of Mariapolis, Man., tallied for the Blues at 18:20 to tie the game at 1-1. After a scoreless middle stanza, the Redmen took the lead again at 3:59 of the third when sophomore centre Marc-Olivier Vachon of Thetford, Mines, Que., converted on the power-play. But less than three minutes later, blueliner Dylan Heide, a rookie blueliner from Winnipeg, replied with the man-advantage to even the count at 2-2.
Goaltender Andrew Flemming of Quispamsis, N.B., made his third consecutive start and collected the win for the Redmen, improving his record to 4-4. He kicked out 26 of 28 shots, plus all four shots faced in the shootout.
Sheehan, a native of Cremona, Alta., took the loss for the Blues. He registered 28 saves and his record dropped to 2-4.
The McGill-Toronto series is one of the oldest hockey rivalries in the world, dating all the way back to 1899. Toronto leads the all-time series with a 122-83-15 record but McGill has won eight of the last 11 and 15 of 22, dating back to the 2004-05 season.
Toronto (7-3-3) plays at UQTR (8-3-1) on Saturday afternoon. The win improved McGill's record to 7-5 and moved the team into a fourth-place tie with Nipissing (7-7) in the OUA East, just three points back of a three-team pack tied for the division lead, with a game in hand on each. McGill hosts Nipissing on Saturday night at McConnell Arena (7 p.m.) and is 10-0 lifetime against the Lakers. The game is slated to be broadcast on North Bay radio online at: www.600ckat.com
REDMEN RAP: Injuries have taken their toll on the Redmen lineup this season...Co-captain Marc-Andre Daneau hobbled off the ice in the third period for the second consecutive outing. Daneau had knee surgery over the summer and missed the first six league games... He is slated to be re-examined by his surgeon early next week... Patrick Belzile, the other co-captain, missed his ninth straight contest with an undisclosed injury... Also out for an extended period is rookie D Jean-Philippe Mathieu, who has missed eight games with a broken foot... The only good news on the injury front was the return of D Hugo Laporte, who missed six outings after being hit-from behind on Oct. 24 against Queen's... Among the faces in the crowd were a number of former Redmen, including Max Langelier-Parent (2008-12), Allan Kobelansky (1980-81), Dr. Skip Kerner (1963-71) and Mike Nelson (1978-84)... Langelier-Parent, who helped lead the Redmen to their first-ever CIS national championship last season, was in town recovering from back surgery as a result of an injury suffered during his first professional game after scoring his first pro goal for the Florida Everblades of the East Coast Hockey League. He had signed an AHL contract last spring but was sent down to the ECHL to make room for higher profile prospects relocated to the AHL as a result of the current NHL lockout... Three other Redmen grads from last year's team are also in pro hockey, including Francis Verreault-Paul (Greenville, ECHL), Marc-Andre Dorion (EHC Linz, Austria) and Evan Vossen (Utah, ECHL), ... Vossen, who signed with Stockton in August, was traded to Utah on Nov. 17 and also scored in his first pro game that night, netting the game-winner in 5-3 win over San Francisco.
