Stingers surprise Martlets with a 2-2 tie

Oct. 3, 2012 - 8:15 PM

Martlet Soccer at Concordia (Away)

Tied 2-2 at Concordia

MONTREAL - Melissa Kedro of Rigaud, Que., scored in the 70th minute as Concordia erased a two-goal deficit and settled for a surprising 2-2 tie against the No.6-ranked McGill Martlets in women's university soccer at Concordia Stadium, Thursday.

Although the draw extended Concordia's undefeated streak to 1-0-2 it also improved McGill's undefeated streak over the Stingers to 17-0-2 dating back to their last loss, a 1-0 setback on penalty kicks in the 2002 conference semifinal. The Martlets have not lost a regular-season contest to their cross-town rivals since a 2-1 decision at Concordia on Oct. 23, 1993 and have posted a 33-0-4 head-to-head record over that span.

That said, it was a disappointing collapse for the defensive-minded Martlets, who hadn't allowed two goals in any of their 14 previous games this season, including non-conference affairs.

Meghan Bourque, a junior midfielder from Burlington, Ont., and Montreal-born defender Bahar Sansar, a first-year transfer from the University of South Florida, had given the Martlets what seemed to be an insurmountable lead. They scored in the 24th and 58th minutes, respectively. But a disputed hand-ball call in the 64th minute gave the Stingers the opening they needed as Jennifer Duff nailed a penalty shot past McGill rookie 'keeper Aidan Mahoney. Six minutes later, the game was tied.

"Our team did not demonstrate enough character after the penalty shot that we gave up," said Marc Mounicot, head coach of the Martlets. "It was a harsh decision by the referee but those calls are part of the game. We were up 2-0 up at that time and despite not playing at our best, we still had control of the score and of the overall play.

The Martlets had a whopping 19-5 edge on shots toward net but were stymied by Concordia 'keeper Saby Dagenais who was credited with seven saves. Mahoney registered two saves between the pipes for McGill.

"We should have reacted better after Concordia scored and needed to make sure that we stayed in a balanced formation. But we gave up an easy goal on a set-play where our defending was poor. We tried hard in the last few minutes but Concordia stayed strong and we were unable to make a big play."

The Martlets have been in a mini-slump, losing five of six potential points over the last two games. McGill sits second in the RSEQ standings with a 6-1-1 record, two points in arrears of the division-leading Montreal Carabins (7-1-0) and one-point head of third-place Sherbrooke (6-2-0).  After a short break for Thanksgiving, they will get the chance to show Concordia (3-2-3) what they learned from this sub-par performance when they host the Stingers in a return match at Molson Stadium on Oct. 11.
