MONTREAL - Team captain Francoise Charest of Quebec City scored a game-high 14 points as McGill overwhelmed Queen's 66-45 in women's basketball exhibition play at Love Competition Hall, Friday.

The Martlets, who led from wire-to-wire, jumped into an 18-7 first quarter lead, then held a 35-21-advantage at the half and 57-32 after three quarters before taking their foot off the gas pedal.

Two other McGill players reached double figures in scoring, with sophomore Dianna Ros of Montreal collecting 11 points and Gabriela Hebert, a sophomore from Chicoutimi, Que., adding 10.

Sydney Kernahan, a fourth-year centre from Calgary, paced the Gaels with 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds. She made only two of 10 shots from the floor but went 6-for-13 from the free-throw line. Teammate Rachel Urosevic of Waterloo, Ont., added eight points.

The Martlets shot 36.9 per cent from the field (24/65), 42.9 from three-point range (6/14) and 60.0 from the line (12/20), compared to Queen's, which connected on a paltry 26.3, 30.8 and 55.0, respectively.

McGill had a 34-33 edge in rebounding, a 3-2 margin in blocked shots and an 8-1 advantage in steals as the Gaels committed 25 turnovers to McGill's eight. The Martlets parlayed the turnovers into 25 points.

It was the final preseason tune-up for McGill, which improved to 3-6 overall and open the RSEQ conference regular season at Laval on Nov. 10.

Queen's, which dropped to 5-3 in preseason action, has three non-conference affairs remaining before the OUA season begins on Nov. 9. The will stay overnight in Montreal to play College Montmorency, one of the top CEGEP teams, on Saturday at 2 p.m.
