Patriotes put damper on Redmen playoff hopes

MONTREAL - Midfielder Karim Acharid scored in the 11th minute and striker Emile Dufour-Gallant added an insurance goal in the 73rd minute as the visiting UQTR Patriotes came up with a crucial 2-0 victory over McGill in men's university soccer at Molson Stadium, Tuesday.

The win improved UQTR's record to 4-3-3 and clinched a playoff berth, moving them three points ahead of McGill with two games remaining in their season. It was a devastating loss for the Redmen, who dropped to 3-5-3 and are now in peril of missing post-season play for the first time since 2005. The Redmen face a must-win affair in their final game, at last-place Sherbrooke (2-8-0) on Saturday at 1 p.m. But, they must also hope for a UQAM (4-5-2) loss in Trois-Rivières, Friday night.

"We gave up an early goal on a nice shot from about 30 yards out and then had to press offensively the rest of the game," said a disappointed Jose Valdes, in his first season as head coach of the Redmen. "We pretty much owned possession of the ball for the rest of the game and hit three goalposts but were burned on a counter play where we were caught on an odd-man situation because of our offensive pressure."

McGill had a 15-11 edge in shots toward the net but were stopped time and time again, by either the goal post or Patriotes netminder Raphael Belanger-Vaillancourt, who registered six saves for the shutout.

Max Leblond, a native of France, made three saves in a losing cause for the Redmen.

REDMEN RAP: Even if McGill makes the playoffs, they would finish fourth and have to play their remaining games on the road. Thus, it was that last home game ever for veterans Alexis Pradié, Winston Pool and team captain Jeremy Hurdle. All three were honoured in a brief ceremony before the game. Pradié, who hails from Marseilles (France), is a two-time all-Canadian defender who is completing his MBA this year. Pool, a winger from Tokyo, Japan, is expected to graduate with a degree in international management. Hurdle, a fifth-year midfielder from Ambler, Penn., will graduate with a geography degree.
